James R. Lyons


James R. Lyons, age 99, passed away July 30, 2011.

Visitation with family was 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011. Visitation was Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home.

Rosary was at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at Sacred Heart Parish.

Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, at Sacred Heart Parish. Father Michael Morin officiated.

Burial was at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery

Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

James R. Lyons was born Jan. 23, 1912, in Wagner, SD, to Dennis and Beatrice (Pesek) Lyons. James was a devoted father, grandfather and friend.

In his first career Jim taught school. He served in the U. S. Army for 28 years and was commonly called “Sarge.” After retiring from the Army he was in charge of records at the Nebraska Penitentiary.  His desire to be busy led Jim to work at the Nebraska Legislature until the age of 97.  He worked for numerous years for the election board.  He was known to visit schools and share his numerous life experiences.  Jim was a proud veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam.  He was recognized as the nation’s top recruiter during his time recruiting in the Lincoln area.  Jim was always willing to lend a hand and he was known as the “fix-it” man.  He loved gardening.  Jim had a strong commitment to his faith.  His passion and legacy were his family; he was adored and will be missed by all. 

He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, American Legion, V.F.W., Knights of Columbus, and Kings Men – Pink Sisters.  

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Diann Lyons, Lincoln; daughters and sons-in-law, Roxann and Tom Sattler, Lincoln; Renee and Bill Stephenson, Lincoln; son-in-law, Orval Stahr, York; grandchildren, spouses: Curt and Kerri Lyons; Chad and Kris Lyons; Cari and Tom Cobler; Cory and Katie Lyons; Jason and Sharon Stahr; Josh Stahr; Jordan Stahr; Jessica and Andrew Rowe; Tony and Kenzie Sattler; Nick Sattler; Stasi Sattler; Ben Sattler; Bridget Stephenson; Aaron Stephenson; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Angela Danielson, Oakland, CA; two brothers, Robert Lyons, Sioux Falls, SD, and Richard Lyons (Bernice), Winner, SD.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marge Lyons; his parents; a daughter, Rosemary Stahr; a brother, Bill and two sisters, Marge and Katherine.

Memorials: Sacred Heart Building Fund, Catholic Social Services or Tabitha.
