OHS Softball Team Sweeps Double Header

Marisa Miles hustles on to second base in action against Lutheran High Northeast last Thursday in O'Neill.

The O'Neill Eagles softball team made the most of a cold and wet day on Thursday, coming away with a double header sweep of Lutheran High Northeast.  After winning only one of three at the Lexington-Cozad invitational last weekend, the Eagle squad was ready to get back to playing well.  Lutheran High is a familiar opponent to the O'Neill and having played once this year and five times last year.

The Eagles scored first in game one on a lead-off single from Jessi Simons and an RBI single from Kelci Ross.  Erin Boyle reached on an error in the second and came around to score, giving OHS a 2-0 lead after two innings.  The Eagles broke the game open in the third and fourth on a doubles from Desi Pinkerman and Marisa Miles and RBI hits from Ross and Dani Barelmann.  Toni Hamik provided more offensive support in the fourth with a 2-RBI double.  Rachel Price and Carli Baseggio combined to no-hit Lutheran High, striking out three.

In the second game, the Eagles scored four in the second inning, with Price and Miles hitting back-to-back doubles and Boyle and Baseggio both scoring.  The Eagles led 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth, needing one run to finish the game by run-rule.  Liz Wallace led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second on an excellent bunt by Hannah Zeeb.  Alex Atkins moved Wallace to third on a ground out.  Ariel Lichty then drove a long double to right-center field for the game winning RBI.  Price and Baseggio again combined for the win, allowing only one hit in five innings and striking out four.

The Eagles will play on Monday, September 19 at the Mid-State Conference tournament at Albion.  Game time is two p.m. against Pierce.
