2013 marks the first year that St. Mary's has had its own wrestling team since the mid-1990's. The St. Mary's wrestling team has four junior high and two varsity wrestlers. Head coach for the team is Robert Atkeson. He is assisted by Tyson Larson, Ryan Johnson and Tyson Cole. St. Mary's is grateful for the generous help and support of the many people who helped to get the program started. Before the season began, the team held a gun raffle to help raise funds. Thank you to everyone who purchased chances. The drawing was held at the parish auction and Hugh Shoemaker was the lucky winner of the gun. Funds raised from the gun raffle helped to purchase a used wrestling mat. The wrestlers are also grateful to St. Mary's School Board, administration, and Booster Club, who have all been supportive of the program from the beginning. People in the community have been tremendously generous, especially the coaches, who donate all the time they spend at practices and meets. The junior high wrestlers began their season in late November, and have been very successful. The varsity wrestlers started their season this year with the O'Neill Wrestling Invitational held on Saturday, Dec. 7. Coach Atkeson said he is expecting great things from the talented wrestlers this season and he hopes to build the team in future years.
