Cardinals Open Season With Two Victories

The St. Mary's Cardinal boys varsity opened the 2012-2013 season this past week with two victories. On Thursday, Nov. 29 the Cards hosted the Clearwater/Orchard Cyclones and won a very hard fought 64-47 ball game. The Cardinals had a small lead at the end of each period until they out scored  the Cyclones 25-12 the final stanza for the victory.

Junior Adam Moon began the season with a fine 36 point performance. Ty Eiler and Kyle Pardun each chipped in with eight points. Moon was 16-19 from the free throw line as the Cardinals as a team shot 20-26 (77%). Moon also led the rebounding with 11 boards followed by Connor Connot with four caroms. Eiler led the assist column with four while on defense Eiler recorded three steals and Moon added four blocked shots.

On Saturday the Cardinals traveled to St. Edward and defeated the Beavers 72-15. The Cards jumped out to a 36-8 first quarter lead and never looked back. Connor Connot and Adam Moon led the St. Mary's offense with 10 points each while Cole Moon, Aaron Ohri and Matt Kelly each contributed nine points apiece. Twelve of the 14 Cardinals suited for the contest scored. Adam Moon led the rebounding with eight boards while Matt Kelly and Kyle Loecker added five and four steals respectively. Adam Moon led the ball handling with three assists followed closely by Ohri and Pardun with two each. St. Mary's shot a respectable 65% at the line (15-23).

The Cardinals faced Niobrara /Verdigre Cougars on Tuesday, Dec. 6 while the Hartington game scheduled for home Friday has been moved to January due to State One Act Competition in Kearney.
