This week the O'Neill Eagle boys team competed at two meets, the Dan Lennon Invite and the Plainview Invitational. The team competed Tuesday, March 27, with approximately 1,000 athletes and then competed at the Plainview Invitational. The Dan Lennon Invitational had no team scores but several young athletes competed well. Derrick Hostert ran well with a 4:44 mile, placing third overall and anchored the sprint medley running the 800. The sprint medley won the gold medal. Running the 200s were Brock Schueth and Connor Peterson. Tate Laursen ran the 400 before handing off to Hostert. Laursen and Peterson also made it through preliminaries and semi-finals to make finals in the 60 meter dash. Laursen placed sixth and Peterson placed eighth. Angel Rodriguez placed fourth in the pole vault with a performance of 11'6". Freshman, Jon Marvin, placed seventh overall. Later that week the squad traveled to the Plainview Invitational. The Eagles won the championship team trophy. Several golds were earned by the O'Neill boys. Senior, Connor Peterson, earned four gold medals. Peterson won the 100 meter and 200 meter and was part of the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays that placed first. Not to be out done Tate Laursen earned three golds and a silver. Laursen placed first in the 300 intermediate hurdles and was part of the gold team of the 4x100 and 4x400. Laursen took second to Peterson in the 100 meter. Derrick Hostert continued his success by winning the 1600, 3200 and was part of the 4x400 meter. Sophomore, Brock Schueth, won the 400 meter, was part of the gold medaling in the 4x100 and 4x400 and third in long jump. Senior, Angel Rodriguez, placed first in the pole vault, second in 110 high hurdles, fourth in the 300 intermediate hurdles and gold in the 4x100 meter. Donnie Taylor placed sixth in the discus, Jesse Albarran fifth in triple jump, Devon Davidson sixth in 800 meter run, Jon Marvin fourth in pole vault, Spencer Knopp fifth 110 high hurdles and 4x800 placed fifth. 'The team performed well this week. I was glad to see them find some success. Even though some of our events didn't score, we saw a lot of improvement. We havenʼt had a full team yet, but hopefully we will be close to a full team by the OʼNeill Invite. We need to keep getting stronger each week in order to reach our goals at the end of the season,' said Coach Hilker. Next week the OʼNeill Eagles will practice and compete at their own invitational, April 12. Twenty-five teams will be competing. Running and field events will start at 10 a.m. The Lady Eagle track team competed at the Plainview Invitational on Friday, March 30, under ideal weather conditions. The Lady Eagles competed well in many events and finished as team runner-up. Junior Brandi Walters continued to excel for O'Neill as she won gold medals in the 100 meter dash, 100 high hurdles, 300 low hurdles and ran the anchor leg on the 4x100 relay team. Senior, Alex Hedlund, had a nice day also finishing second in the 300 low hurdles, third in the 100 high hurdles and was part of the gold medal winning 4x100 relay. Kelsey Appleby finished fourth place in the discus and sixth in the shot put to score points for O'Neill. Senior, Allison Depko, also fared well in the shot put finishing up with the silver medal. The freshman high jump duo of McKenzie Adamson and Randi Pinkerman both jumped 4'8" to finish in fourth place and fifth place respectively. Randi was also a member of the gold medal winning 4x100 relay. McKenzie jumped 29'8.5" in the triple jump to end up in sixth place and ran 69'6" in the 400 to earn some points for the team finishing in sixth place. In the pole vault, Rachel Price and Dani Barelmann both cleared 8' to tie for fourth place and Rachel was part of the 4x100 relay. In the distance running events, Lizzie Price finished second in the 3200 and fourth in the 1600. Teammate Dani Barelmann ran a nice race in the 1600 to finish in second place. "I was very happy with most of our times today. Brandi and Alex both had some great times in the 300 low hurdles this early in the season. We were missing some athletes due to the FFA State Convention, so I was really happy we ended as team runner-up. Hopefully we will have our entire team ready to compete at the O'Neill Invite," said Coach Peterson. The O'Neill Lady Eagle track team traveled to Vermillion, SD, to compete at the Dan Lennon Class B Indoor Invitational at the Dakota Dome. Over 30 teams from Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska competed in this meet. The Lady Eagles were led by Junior Brandi Walters who placed third in both the 60 meter dash and the 60 meter high hurdles. Senior, Rachel Price, also had a nice day getting over 8-6 in the pole vault for a third place finish. Junior, Dani Barelmann, placed sixth in the pole vault going 7-6. Senior Alex Hedlund also ran well, placing sixth in the 60 meter high hurdles. "I was happy with our efforts today. We competed very well and decreased our times from last year in most of our events. It is always a fun meet to attend and see many different schools we do not see very often." said Coach Peterson.
