Last week the O'Neill Eagles Boys competed at the state meet held in Omaha, at Burke Stadium. Three individuals represented the O'Neill Boys Track program at the Class B level: Michael Hedlund, Derrick Hoster and Beau Schueth.

Michael Hedlund ran the 800 meter run. Michael was in heat one of two. Michael placed fourth in his heat and 11th overall. Hedlund beat two other athletes in the 800 meter run who previously beat him during the regular season. Michael is also recorded the second fastest time in the 800 as a sophomore in O'Neill, only to be topped by Kyle Johnson.

"Michael ran really well. Hedlund ran a lot better race than last year in the state meet. Even though we didn't reach our goal time, Michael ran a strong race. With the experience that Michael received this year, he is going to be that much stronger next year," said Coach Hilker.

Derrick Hostert ran the 1600 meter run. Hostert ran his personal best by four seconds, 4:34.74. Derrick was able to place 10th overall. The only person that beat Derrick from his districts was Jake Kment from Logan View who won the Class B mile at 4:25.85. Derrick posted the third fastest time as a sophomore in the 1600 meter run for the Eagles.

"Derrick ran really well. Only two people before the state meet have beaten Hostert in the mile this year. This is good experience for Derrick. He seems to get a better understanding of the race every time he runs it," commented Hilker.

Beau Schueth also qualified for the state meet in the long jump. Beau was unable to compete in state competition due to being ill.

"Beau is a great student/athlete that anybody would be proud to have walked their hallways at their school. Schueth just got the short end of the stick this time. I know that Beau understands that one meet doesn't measure the success that you have as an athlete in this particular sport. He meant a lot to the team and he is still a state qualifier, we will miss him next year," said Coach Hilker.
