Atkinson — Marilyn Elsie Schaaf, 90, of Atkinson, died Sunday, Jan. 21 2024 in O'Neill.

Visitation was held Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024 at Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson with a rosary.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 26, 2024 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson. Fr. Ross Burkhalter officiated. Music was provided by soloist Leanna Vrooman and organist Diane Osborne.

Pallbearers were Marilyn's grandkids Lee and James Winkler, Jeffrey Finley, Janessa Finley-Ford, Trista and Julia Schaaf and Heath and Caden Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers were Kevin, Wayne Dean and Jerry Monahan and Travis Finley-Ford.

Burial was in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Atkinson.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Marilyn Humpal was born on Oct. 17, 1933 at the family home in Atkinson. She graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic High School. After graduation she attended Duchesne College and then completed a cosmetology course at Capital Beauty School in Omaha.

On Sept. 2, 1953 she was united in marriage to Frank J. Schaaf upon his discharge from his tour of duty in Korea. To this union five children were born.  

Marilyn owned and operated her beauty shop and flower shop.

Marilyn enjoyed knitting, sewing/quilting, sculpting, painting and sketching and all forms of flying. She spent time volunteering at the clinic and St. Joseph's Catholic School and taking care of her five children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and recently helping Frank and herself remain at home. 

After Frank's passing in April 2023, she chose Evergreen Assisted Living as her home, where she read and enjoyed going over the 200+ letters Frank sent her from Korea.

Marilyn is survived by her four children Sheryl (Jerry) Winkler of Atkinson, Sandi (Dennis) Finley of Ewing, Vicky (Mark) Johnson of          Atkinson and Rocky (America) Schaaf of Seattle, WA; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law Darlene Schaaf of Atkinson.

She was preceded in death by her husband Frank, one son Steve Schaaf, one granddaughter Julia Schaaf, her parents Arthur and Elsie (Skrdla) Humpal, two sisters Kay Mosher and Donna Cole, two sisters-in-law Connie Schaaf and Mary Ellen Monahan and three brothers-in-law Paul Brau, Don Schaaf and Leon Schaaf.
