Lady Cardinals Take

Two Wins In First Games

EMily Everitt goes up for a lay-up against a player from Clearwater/Orchard.

The Lady Cards scored some impressive numbers in their first two games of the 2012-13 basketball season.

St. Mary's won a very hard fought contest against a determined Niobrara Valley Conference opponent at home facing the C-O Cyclones from Clearwater-Orchard. While the score showed a 27 point victory of 61-34, it was a close game most of the way.

SMH led 20-16 after the first period and was able to extend their lead after that. Emily Everitt broke the game wide open as she knocked down four-three pointers in a row finishing with a team high 21 points. Freshman Sydney Hupp knocked down 10 more points, followed by Brooke Bauer and Justine Blumenstock with seven each. Addie Wetzel hauled in eight rebounds along with four each from Brooke and Justine.

"This was a very good team effort from everyone as the players all were able to get varsity time in. We will need to improve our free throw shooting and cut down on the turn-overs," said Coach Pardun

On Saturday the St. Mary's Lady Cardinals varsity flew to St. Edward and came away with a 68-30 victory. The Lady Cards exploded with 39 points in the first quarter. The St. Edward Beavers had two really good post players that caused a lot of problems inside with screens an back cuts. This was a very physical game unlike the score indicates.

St. Mary's out rebounded St. Ed 31-20 against a good sized team. Brooke Bauer and Sydney Hupp were top re-bounders with eight and six boards. Brooke led in scoring with 21 points followed by Mackenzie Wecker and Emily Everitt with 11 and nine. Bridgett Schneider led in steals with eight and Mackenzie recorded six as the team finished with 24 compared to St. Edward's one. This was a good road win for St. Mary's. All team members saw action on Saturday giving them valuable playing time.

St. Mary's will host the (1-1) Niobrara-Verdigre Lady Cougars on Dec. 4.
