Last week was a big one for St. Mary's as they sent the lady Cardinals to compete in the State Girls Basketball Tournament. After downing Sumner-Eddyville Miller in Sub-Districts, the girls moved into state play on Thursday, Feb. 29.

Quarterfinals were played Thursday, Feb. 29 against McCool Junction where the Cardinal's retired them early 53-40.

McCool Junction played a strong opener, beating the Cardinals in a big 20-13 take-down. Quarter two gave the Cards the edge they needed. The Mustangs fumbled the brawl, and the Cardinals took the lead, 23-22.

In the third quarter the Cards again put up 10 points while holding down the Mustangs to seven, giving them little room for a comeback. After a strong start, the Mustangs were forced to admit defeat in the finale as the Cardinals blew them away 20-11 to move into semifinals on March 1.

Mya Hedstrom secured the win with 25 points, shooting eight two-pointers, as well as six rebounds and four steals; Lorissa Reiman scored double digits with 14 points, an impressive 12 rebounds and one steal; Alissa Brabec had eight points, two rebounds and two steals; Gracie Williamson had two points, a solid seven rebounds and two steals; Annabelle Barlow had two points, five rebounds and one steal; Adyson Peterson also had two points as well as one rebound; and Pyper Ickes had one rebound.

On Friday, Mar. 1, Semifinals were held at the Pinnacle arena, and the Cardinals faced Pender, who entered with a 25-1 record. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, this would match would stop them dead in their tracks in the tournament.

The Cardinals kicked the match off strong, claiming first quarter 10-9.  In the next, however, the Pendragons managed to steer the match in their direction with a 14-9 take-down.

Down but not out, the Cardinals gave a strong resistance, but the Pendragons once again put the hurt on them, bringing the game to a seven-point lead from Pender. The final quarter gave the Pendragons all the more reason to brag, taking down the Cards 15-13 to take the game.

Winning 48-39, Pender moved into the Championships round where they would take down Southern Valley to claim the Championship title of this year's Tournament.

In this match, Hedstrom again took charge with her 20 points, shooting 12 two-pointers and two three-pointers, as well as seven rebounds and three steals; Brabec had 10 points, three rebounds and two steals; Reiman had nine points and the highest rebounds with eight; Williamson scored six rebounds and one steal; Ickes had two points and two rebounds; and Barlow had two rebounds.

While the Cards were taken out in the Semifinals, their time in the tournament wasn't quite over. After the Championships bout the Cards faced Guardian Angels Central Catholic  to determine third and fourth place.

The match started off close, with the Bluejays scraping by with one point, 16-15. The next went to the Cardinals when they put up 17 and held the Bluejays to 16 to bring the game to a tie going into half.

Quarter three brought an end to the close scoring when the Bluejays brought down the Cards 16-8 to take a massive leap to first place. The finale added insult to injury and gave the Bluejays the obvious victory in this match-up.

Hedstrom still brought her A-game with 23 points, shooting 11 two-pointers, as well as four rebounds and three steals; Reiman had 13 points, a solid nine rebounds and one steal; Barlow had six points, three rebounds and one steal; Brabec had four points, two rebounds and one steal; Peterson two rebounds and one steal; Ickes one rebound and three steals; and Williamson one rebound.
