Liberty, KY — James "Greg"  Gregory Buis, 71, of Liberty, KY, formerly of O'Neill, died peacefully Monday, July 21, 2025 at his childhood home in Liberty, KY, surrounded by his best Kentucky friends and the wonderful Hospice of Lake Cumberland Critical Care Team.

A celebration of life service will be held in both Liberty, KY and O'Neill at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Team Jack Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 607, Atkinson, NE 68713 or online at www.teamjackfoundation.org in Greg's name.

McKinney-Brown Funeral Home in Liberty, KY is in charge of the arrangements.

Born in Kentucky, on Sept. 19, 1953, Greg was the son of the late Nathaniel A. and Rose (White) Buis. Greg graduated from Casey County High School in 1971, enjoying basketball and golf.  An avid golfer, Greg played on the golf team at Union College during his time there.

Years ago, while delivering gates across the country, Greg traveled to Nebraska and found a “home away from home.” He spent the past 45 years living in O'Neill, before returning to Kentucky earlier this year.

Greg worked at Circle BK Farm & Ranch from 1991 until his retirement in 2024. He was known around the farm for his loyalty, his sense of humor and his work ethic.

Greg was a lifelong sports enthusiast whose heart was always with the Kentucky Wildcats, though he developed a strong fondness for the Nebraska Cornhuskers too. During the months when Nebraska's weather prohibited golf, he enjoyed hunting as well.

Greg was a devoted son and returned to Kentucky for regular visits to see his mother. Greg treasured the "car port" gatherings at Rosie's house.  Friends and neighbors frequently stopped by for a beverage after work, solved the world's problems and shared stories before heading home for supper. Weekends often meant sharing a meal under the car port as well. Even when cancer recently caused him discomfort, the place he found comfort and happiness in, was Rosie's porch.

Greg is survived by his daughter Jennifer (Steve) Schamp of Norfolk; his two stepsons Jeremy (Kami) Hilkemeier of Omaha and Justin (Jennifer) Hilkemeier of Atkinson; nine grandchildren Joshua, Jacob, Chloe, Graeden, Preslee, Blake, Brynn, Madison and Kamryn; dear friends Linda Sue Terry and Debbie Beard, both of Liberty, KY; brother in law and sisters-in-law Jim and Deb Frederick of O'Neill and Sheri Buis of Cynthiana, KY; one niece Lindsay Metschke of Nebraska; four nephews Brent Frederick and Ryan Frederick of Nebraska and Aaron Buis and Nathan Buis of Kentucky; and he was cherished by his Circle BK family and golfing buddies.

In addition to his parents, Greg was preceded in death by his brother Michael Buis of Cynthiana, KY.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mckinneybrown.com.
