Rough Week For The Irish

Monday July 9 saw the Irish seniors take on Creighton for the fifth time this season for the Elkhorn Valley League championship. Creighton took an early lead with four runs in the top of the first inning. The Irish answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first frame. Creighton added another run in the second to extend their lead to three runs after the second inning. The Irish held Creighton scoreless in the third and then scored three to tie the game after three. Creighton picked up two more runs in the top of the fourth and the Irish answered with two runs in the bottom part of the fourth to tie the game again. Creighton again took the lead in the fifth with a run and the Irish plated one in the sixth to keep the score knotted. The seventh inning was scoreless for both teams so the game went into extra innings. No one scored in the eighth. In the top of the ninth Creighton came up with one run on one hit and the Irish could not answer making the final score 8-9. The Irish Seniors finish the regular season 19-4.

The Irish Juniors opened Class B, Area 5 play on Friday meeting Central City. Central City started the scoring with one run in the first and continued with three in the second and four in the third, all unearned. The Irish finally got two runs in the fifth but four more runs from Central City ended the game early due to the ten run rule.

Dropping into the loser bracket the Irish Juniors played Wayne on Sunday night. Once again errors plagued the Irish as Wayne started the game with three unearned runs in the first inning. The Irish settled down to hold the Blue Devils in the second and third innings but in the fourth four walks and an error resulted in four more runs. Meanwhile, the Irish accumulated four hits to the Blue Devils three for the entire game but could only plate one run. This concluded the season for a very young set of Irish Juniors.

Friday begins play in the Class C, Area 1 Senior Legion tournament for the Irish. The Irish will enter the tournament as the first seed and play the winner from Ainsworth-Madison opening game.
