Grace M. Harkins Grace Myrtle Harkins, age 92, formerly of Ewing and Chambers passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at the Golden LivingCenter in O'Neill. Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2011, at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill with a 5:30 p.m. prayer service. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2011, at Bethany Presbyterian Church of rural Ewing. Rev. Leanne Masters officiated. Music was provided by Jean Hoffman, organist and Katelyn Stevens, soloist and congregational singing. Burial was in the Valley View Cemetery of rural Ewing Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill was in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Bernie Fulkerth, Danny Fulkerth, Randy Fulkerth, Dean Fulkerth, Jerald Day, Chris Harkins, Darwin Brock, Colin Stevens, Derek Harkins and Aaron Closson. Honorary pallbearers were her granddaughters, Tammy Naab, Beverly Proskocil, Peggy Michalski, Alisha Luebbe, Katelyn Stevens and Tamara Closson. Grace was born on Dec. 11, 1918, in Elgin to John and Mabel (Smith) Rouse. She graduated from Elgin Public High School in 1937. Following graduation, Grace took a job working on the Harkins' ranch where she met and married her future husband, Harvey Harkins. Harvey and Grace were married on Dec. 3, 1938, at the O'Neill Presbyterian Church. They were married for 63 years during which time Grace was a devoted wife and mother. Grace loved flowers, cooking, and family. Survivors include five daughters, Mable and Darrell Smidt of Milford, Iowa, Patricia Day of Ord, Judy Brock of Fullerton, Debra and Cole Stevens of Chambers, Linda Closson of O'Neill; one son, DeWayne and Maria Harkins of Spring Valley, CA; 16 grandchildren; 31 great- grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; one brother, Richard and Nancy Rouse of South Carolina; and three sisters-in-law, Donna Rouse of Wakefield, Lela Harkins of O'Neill and Joan Rouse of Illinois Grace is preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2002; brothers, Gilbert, Phil and Don; one sister, Betty; and three sons-in-law, Lee Fulkerth, Jerry Day and Ronald Brock.
