Ewing Falls To Stuart In Sub District Basketball

The Ewing Tigers came off a 13-day layoff with an impressive 62-49 win over the Mullen Broncos at Ainsworth on Thursday night.  With the win the Tigers advance onto a sub-district championship game against Stuart on Friday night.  The Tigers led by only four after one quarter of play, but a big second quarter in which the Tigers outscored the Broncos 21-10 allowed the Tigers to take a 15-point advantage into the halftime break.  The Tigers were able to keep the Mullen team at arms length in the second half to come away with the 13-point victory.  Sophomores Blake Cunningham and Ben Ramold led the way for the Tigers with 15 points each, while sophomore Jake Walton was also in double figures with 11.  Robert Nordby and Damian Summers each added seven, while Michael Hynes went 5-6 at the charity stripe for the Tigers.  Cunningham led the way on the glass with 10 rebounds, while Nordby and Walton each pulled down seven.  Summers dished out five assists while Cunningham and Walton each added four dimes.  Tyler Hickok did a great job defensively down low and on the glass filling in for the injured Robert Nordby.

“Our players did a nice job of preparing for and executing our game plan against Mullen tonight.  Even when we lost Robert Nordby to a cut early in the game, we had Michael Hynes and Tyler Hickok come in and do a great job inside for us.  Our boys played with great energy throughout the game and were able to maintain a big halftime lead and really not allow Mullen back into the ballgame," said Coach Appleby.

Stuart Closed

Season On Tigers

The Ewing Tigers closed their season with a tough 43-39 loss to the Stuart Broncos in the sub-district championship game at Ainsworth on Friday night.  The first half saw the action go back and forth with the Tigers holding a three-point advantage after one quarter of play and a one-point lead at halftime.  However, the Broncos came out strong in the second half and were able to hold the lead throughout most of the second half. The Tigers knocked down three late 3-point shots to cut the Broncos lead to 40-39 with a minute and half to play.  However, the Tigers came up empty on their final two possessions and Stuart hit some late free throws to move on to the district championship against Wynot on Tuesday night.

Blake Cunningham led the way for the Tigers with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Robert Nordby added 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Ben Ramold hit two three-pointers for six points and Damian Summers led in assists with five.

“Our kids really competed hard on the defensive end of the floor and on the glass tonight.  We had chances to win this game but were unable to hit the big shot or have a great possession offensively when we really needed it.  We were disappointed with our record this year but not with the effort given by these young men.  Injuries hurt our team and we look forward to next year with the return of our entire team except for senior Michael Hynes and foreign exchance student Toby Leppanen.  We know the areas we need to improve upon for next year and are excited to begin preparation to have a great season in 2012-2013.  Michael Hynes was a great senior leader for us this year in the way he represented himself everyday with class and dignity in the classroom, on the practice floor, and as a great teammate and person.  We thank Michael for all of his contributions to our program over the last four years and wish him the best of luck in all of his future endeavors,” commented coach Greg Appleby.
