Eagles Host Triangular 


O'Neill hosted a triangular with West Holt and Valentine on Tuesday, Sep. 4.  O'Neill faced Valentine in the first match.  The Eagles were competitive against the Badgers despite suffering a loss 25-19 and 25-17.

  The first set they trailed by just a couple of points until the end and in the second set the Eagles led, came back to pull ahead at 15-14, but then gave up a big run of points to the Badgers.

Leading in kills was Lindsey Appleby with five. Sarah Devall handled the setting duties with eight assists.  Defensively Alyssa Sobotka and Appleby each had six digs to lead the Eagles. Appleby also led with 14 good serve receives. Tapanga Lihs had two ace serves for a total of five points, followed by Sobotka and Appleby with one ace for four points each.

Valentine defeated West Holt in three sets the second game of the triangular.

In game three the Eagles went up against the West Holt Huskies.  The Eagles struggled to get anything started this game losing in straight sets 25-8 and 25-11.  Passing was very inconsistent so the offense had difficulty putting anything across the net that the Huskies couldn't pick up.

The Eagles traveled to Crofton last Thursday for action.  The Eagles put up a good fight the first set leading for most of game up until 23-23 when the Warrior pulled ahead 24-23.  O'Neill stopped the game point and got the lead back 25-24, but Crofton got the ball back and scored three to win 27-25. 

In the second set the Warriors jumped out to a big lead and the Eagles couldn't recover losing 25-16. The Eagles bounced back the third set to get a win 25-21.

Game four both teams battled up to about 12 points and then the Warriors put together a couple of big runs to win the match 25-15.

At the net for the Eagles Lindsey Appleby led with 14 kills followed by Alyssa Sobotka with nine kills.  Natalie Brodersen and Megan Peter added two kills apiece.  Tapanga Lihs, McKenzie Adamson and Appleby all had one block each.

Alyssa Sobotka and Addie Schneider topped the serve receive chart with 13 good receives apiece followed by Appleby with 10 good receives. Appleby led with 16 digs against the Warriors while Peter and Sobotka followed with 10 and eight digs respectively.

Sarah Devall did a nice job setting with a total of 17 assists.  Appleby added five set assists while Sobotka added five assists.

Appleby and Devall each had three ace serves on the night and led in scoring with 12 and 11 points respectively.

The Eagles participated in the Boone Central/Newman Grove Volleyball Tournament this past weekend.  The Eagles started out the tournament with a match up against Columbus Lakeview who went on to win the championship.  Lakeview downed the Eagles in two sets 25-10 and 25-16. Leading passer was Lindsey Appleby with 10 digs and five serve receives.  Appleby also led in kills with five from setter Sarah Devall with six assists.

In the second game the Eagles played the Central City Bison. The Eagles stayed with the Bison for a while trailing only by one point after a full rotation 13-12, but they were able to get a reasonable lead in the second rotation. O'Neill lost 25-17 and 25-12. Defensively Natalie Brodersen and Lindsey Appleby led with eight digs apiece.  Offensively Brodersen, Appleby, Lihs and Sobotka all had two kills. Devall had six set assists.

The third match of the day the Eagles were downed by Schuyler 25-13 and 25-21.  The Eagles finally competed better the second set of the match. At the net Peter, Lihs and McKenzie Adamson all had three kills against the Warriors. Appleby led in digs with six and had 10 good serve receives while Sobotka had four digs and six good receives.  Devall had six set assists while Brandi Taylor and Appleby each added two assists.
