Eagles Roll With Wins

The O'Neill Eagles are off to a 3-0 start this football season defeating the Central City Bison last Friday on homecoming night 31-10.  This is the best start for the Eagles since 1988.

"We were very proud of our team's overall effort against Central City last Friday night.  Central City was a very big and physical opponent that gave us some very scary match-up issues that we were a little unsure of going into the game," said Coach Eichelberger.

Defensively the Eagles missed a double pass play in the first half that led to the lone touchdown. Then a fumble they lost deep in their own territory where the Bison came away with the other three points.  "We did give up some yardage in this game, but our over all team goal is how many points are in their column." "Offensively we came out and took advantage of their aggressive defense by striking on the first play of the game on a 71 yard passing strike to Derrick Hostert from Michael Hedlund. On the third play a 35 yard pass to Charlie Burtwhistle to make it a quick 14-0 lead. "

"This was a good win for us on homecoming week where we overcame all of the distractions and kept enough focus to take care of the task at hand.  I am proud of the team so far this season.  We will need to continue in some areas and become a more disciplined team to compete in our upcoming games.  Each week we take a couple steps closer, but we are still not where we want to be.  Madison is also a very scary team that we have to travel and go play.  They have a bunch of older, hard-nosed players that will come to play especially at home, so I hope our players stay grounded and focused this week," said coach Brock Eichelberger.

Leading offensively for the Eagles was Michael Hedlund with 13 carries for 80 yards and one touchdown rushing, Tate Laursen with 12 carries and 40 yards and David Fox with seven carries for 18 yards. Leading the Eagles receiving game was Derrick Hostert with five receptions for 115 yards and one touch down and Charley Burtwistle with four receptions for 73 yards and one touchdown. Michael Hedlund threw 15 times for 12 completions and 207 yards.

Leading the Eagles defensively was Thomas Schipporeit and Derrick Hostert with 12 total tackles each.
