She's safe Kelci Ross slides into third where she should have been safe but was called out by the umpire in action against Friend on Saturday at the Central City Tourney.

The O’Neill Eagle softball team played seven games this past week, beginning with it’s first trip ever to the Mid-State Conference Tournament.  The Eagles played two games on Monday, the 19th, defeating Pierce for the third time this year, 12-4 and then losing a tough one to 19-0 Wayne, 1-0.  In the Pierce game Desi Pinkerman went 2-2 with three RBI’s and Marisa Miles had two RBI’s.  Jessi Simons stole three bases for the Eagles and scored two runs.

The Wayne game was tough throughout, with O’Neill getting only two hits, one from Rachel Price and  lead-off double in the fourth from Dani Barelmann.  The Eagles played excellent defense and allowed only three singles to the Wayne offense.  Price pitched the complete game striking out five in the 1-0 loss.

On Tuesday, the Eagles captured third place in the conference with a 4-1 win over Lutheran High Northeast.  Barelmann and Pinkerman again lead the offense with two and three hits respectively and Toni Hamik  had a key RBI.

The Eagles traveled to the Central City Invitational on Saturday  and finished the day with a 3-1 record.  The Eagles played Aquinas Catholic in the first game of the day, defeating them 3-0.  Rachel Price struck out 10 in the game and the OHS defense allowed just three hits.  Shortstop Kelci Ross and Toni Hamik both had RBI singles in the game and Randi Pinkerman stole two bases for the Eagles.

O’Neill then faced state-ranked Friend in the next game.  The offense started fast, scoring six runs in the first.  Key hits in the inning came from Erin Boyle and catcher Carli Baseggio who had a 2- RBI double.  Friend came back in the top of the second inning with four runs of their own on two hits and three O’Neill errors.  The game went back and forth until the top of the seventh when Friend scored five runs.  O’Neill couldn’t score in the bottom of the inning, coming away with a 12-9 loss.  Baseggio and Barelmann each had two hits in the game and Toni Hamik had two RBI’s.

Up next was the High Plains Storm.  The Eagles scored in the first inning on a double from Desi Pinkerman and an RBI triple from Kelci Ross, who went 2-4 with two RBI’s in the game.  High Plains could only manage five hits off  Rachel Price and the Eagles came away with an easy 8-2 win.

OHS went right to their fourth game in a row, playing the host team, Central City.  Jessi Simons went 2-2 in the game with two runs scored and Randi Pinkerman had a single, scored and stole a base.  She also had two put-outs and four assists at second base.  Catcher Carli Baseggio threw out two runners at second base on steal attempts and OHS won 7-2.

The Eagles season record now stands at 16-8.  They will play in South Sioux City on Tuesday and a double-header against Chadron in Valentine on Thursday.  They finish their regular season schedule with a JV/Varsity matchup against West Point CC on Saturday and their final home game on Monday Oct. 3rd  against St. Paul.
