Lady Eagles Face Off With Tough Opponents


The Creighton Bulldogs visited the Aerie for volleyball action against the Eagles. Creighton came out on top with a three set victory: 20-25, 20-25, and 21-25.

The first set Creighton got off to a good start and the Eagles were never able to catch up trailing most of the set. The second set the Eagles kept it a little closer, but still trailed by a couple of points and were unable to get the lead. The third set O’Neill had the lead through the first rotation 15-12, but then Creighton’s libero scored a string of points to start the second rotation giving them the edge at 18-16.

Offensively Lindsey Appleby led with seven kills followed by Megan Peter with three kills.  Alyssa Sobotka, Tapanga Lihs and Natalie Brodersen each had two kills.  Setter Sarah Devall had 12 set assists.

Appleby led all scorers with 18/18 serves for 13 points and five ace serves.

Alyssa Sobotka topped the dig chart with 18 digs while Appleby added 14 digs.  Appleby led with 10 good serve receives and Sobotka had seven.

Last Thursday the Eagles battled against the Ainsworth Bulldogs in five sets, but came up a little short 25-12, 12-25, 25-19, 15-25 and 15-12.

O’Neill started off strong and took advantage of the Bulldog errors the first set. The second set Ainsworth scored early from some well-placed kills. The third set O’Neill bounced back with a great string of points by server Lindsey Appleby.  She served nine straight serves for a total of eight points, four of which were aces. The fourth set was close up to 12 points and then the Bulldogs had a long run of points to give them a big lead and the win to force the match to game five. Game five was tied at 8-8 and later the Eagles were down 12-13 with a chance to tie it. The Bulldogs stopped the tie and went on to win 15-12.

At the net Lindsey Appleby put down 14 kills for the Eagles and had two blocks followed by Alyssa Sobtoka with four kills. Tapanga Lihs added three kills and two blocks while Megan Peter added three kills and one block. Sarah Devall led in assists with 12.

Defensively Appleby topped the dig and serve receive charts with 28 digs and 21 good serve receptions.  Sobotka followed with 19 digs and 10 good receives. Other top passers included Natalie Brodersen and Megan Peter with nine and eight digs respectively.

Serving was led by Lindsey Appleby with 20/20 and five aces.  Alyssa Sobotka was close behind with 19/20 serves and two aces.

“We played well at times, but need to find ways to stop the opponents scoring runs and limit our own errors,” said Coach Appleby.
