St. Mary's Finds Crofton
Holiday Tournament Tough

"It was a very rough weekend at the Crofton Holiday Tourney for the St. Mary's boy's basketball team. The Cardinals suffered a first round loss to Ainsworth by a score of 72-61 and in the second round were defeated by Crofton 66-55.

The Cardinals had a very tough order to begin with going into this tournament. Ainsworth had been averaging over 80 points per game in their first six outings. With the high school moratorium starting at midnight on Dec. 22 and running until midnight Dec. 27, there wasn't much of a window to practice for such a good team. Every school in the state suffers when  a team comes right back from the break after five days off and then plays immediately, unless they have a place, not involved with the school, to shoot around. For those that don't know, teams are not allowed to practice for five days over Christmas, coaches aren't allowed to talk to players about basketball, show videos, etc.

"We definitely looked out of sorts. Our plan was to slow the game down and work the ball on offense against the fast moving and accurate shooting Bulldogs. We  came up short. Tied at 28 during the half we then came out and shot ourselves in the foot with five quick turnovers and Ainsworth converted, making three threes and a two pointer," said Coach Viterna.

The Cards managed to keep the Bulldogs under 80 points, but failed to beat them and lost at the buzzer 72-61.

The Crofton game was another tough one with very few fouls called on either side. At half-time the Cards held a 25-24 advantage and after three quarters were  ahead 48-39. The Cardinals just couldn't get on track in the final quarter as Crofton pulled away and won 66-55. St. Mary's now stands at 4-3 with Niobrara/Verdigre next on the schedule.

In the game against Ainsworth the Cardinals were led by: Adam Moon with 19 points, seven rebounds and three steals; Matt Kelly 16 points and 11 rebounds; Kyle Pardun nine points, seven rebounds and five steals; Tyler Regan seven points and 11 rebounds; Kyle Regan eight points and one steal and Wilson Hupp two points and two rebounds.

Leading the Cardinals in the game against Crofton were: Adam Moon with 22 points, eight rebounds and two steals; Kyle Pardun 11 points, two rebounds and five steals;  Matt Kelly  10 points and seven rebounds; Kyle Regan three points and four rebounds; Tyler Regan three points and six rebounds; Zack Novak two points and two rebounds; Jared Tomjack  two points and Wilson Hupp two points and three rebounds.
