Justine Blumenstock

In an exciting, five set match on Friday, Oct. 7, the St. Mary's Cardinals were defeated on their home court by the Wynot Blue Devils.

In the first set, Wynot jumped out to a 15-8 led.  With a couple three-point serving runs by Bridget & Megan Schneider, the Cardinals were able to bring the score to Wynot 21- St. Mary's 18.  But the Cardinals' hitting errors and Wynot's strong net play, gave the Blue Devils the first set, 25-22. Aggressive serving and attacking by the Cardinals in the second set, gave them a 19-11 lead.  This forced Wynot to call timeout.  After the timeout, Wynot started to find the St. Mary's floor by tipping and the Blue Devils went on a scoring run.  This cut the St. Mary's lead to three points, 23-20.  After a St. Mary's timeout, Megan Schneider and Justine Blumenstock each answered with a kill and St. Mary's got the second set win, 25-22.  In the third set, Wynot jumped out to an 18-13 lead, but the Cardinals were able to chip away at the score and tied it up at 18-18.  It was point-for-point until the end when Wynot was able to gain a 2-1 set lead by winning the third, 25-23.  The fourth set was all St. Mary's.  Fueled by three ace serves and two ace blocks, the Cardinals came out strong and were able to separate the score early.  The Cardinals cruised to a 25-10 win, tying the sets 2-2, forcing a fifth set of play.  In the fifth, it was once again point-for-point. A missed serve and a few errors by the Cardinals allowed Wynot to gain a 12-8 lead.  Wynot finished the match being assertive at the net and winning the fifth, 15-11.

On the night, Kaylee Krotter and Bridget Schneider set up the offense with 22 and 19 set assists.  St. Mary's attackers were able to post 50 kills.  Brooke Bauer led the attack with 13 and Emily Everitt contributed 10.  The defense was led by Brooke Bauer and Mackenzie Wecker with 18 digs each and Megan Schneider added 17.  Bridget Schneider posted 3 of the teams 10 ace serves on the night.

On Tuesday, October 11, St. Mary's traveled to Hartington to take on the Cedar Catholic Trojans.

The Cardinals had a slow start and the Trojans won the first two sets, 25-14, 25-13.  In the third, the Lady Cards jumped out to a 9-1 lead.  The Trojans had a scoring run late in the set, but the Cardinals were able to win the third, 25-19.  The fourth set went point-for-point until mid-set when the Trojans had their biggest lead, 18-14.  A timeout by St. Mary's stopped the Trojans' momentum and the Cardinals were able bring the score within one point, 22-21.  It was a battle until the end, with Cedar Catholic winning the fourth, 25-23.

Justine Blumenstock led the attack with 8 kills and Mackenzie Wecker added 7.  Brooke Bauer led the defense with 14 digs.  Set assists were led by Bridget Schneider with 12 and Kaylee Krotter contributed 11.  St. Mary's record is now 15-5.  The Cardinals will celebrate Parents' Night when they host Ewing on Thursday, October 13 with junior varsity starting at 6:00 p.m.
