Agnes M. Dobias

Amelia — Agnes Mae Dobias, 93, of Amelia, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2024, in O'Neill.

Visitation was held Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024 at Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024 at the funeral home in Atkinson. Pastor Wayne Owens officiated.

Pallbearers were Jerry Prewitt, Carl Dobias, Joey Dobias, Gene Dobias, Clark Smith and Jess Prewitt.

Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Atkinson.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Agnes was born on April 4, 1930 to Joseph F. and Pauline (Koza) Malena in Stanton.  

On March 6, 1940, at the age of 9, she moved with her parents to a small ranch 12 ½ miles southeast of Atkinson in the Amelia area on the former Walter Ranch.  

Agnes attended country schools at Dist. 17 in Stanton County and Districts 99 and 23 in Holt County.  

She helped her dad and mother with ranching from working in the hayfield to taking care of her parents and raising Hereford cattle.  After her dad passed away in August of 1956, the ranch was passed to her and her brother Franklin. They both continued taking care of their mother together.

On June 11, 1962, Agnes Mae married the love of her life James Dobias at the Presbyterian church in Atkinson.  James joined the family and they continued to ranch side by side with her  brother Franklin Malena.  Later on Franklin got married and moved to Pierre, SD and sold his half of the cattle to Agnes and leased his half of the ranch to Agnes and James.  

Agnes Mae enjoyed sewing, embroidery work, flowers, raising chickens and ducks and working side by side with her husband.  Her pride and joy was her Hereford cows and calves. Agnes and James continued to live on the ranch and in their later years retired. Niece Natalie and her husband Jerry Prewitt took good care of them and managed the ranch until 2013 when they took ownership of it entirely.

Agnes is survived by her brother Franklin Malena of O'Neill, special niece Natalie Prewitt and her husband Jerry of Atkinson, as well as many other nieces, nephews and cousins. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband James.
