Lady Cards Cut Short In District First Round

8 hrs ago (0)

Last Monday the pressure was high when the St. Mary's Cardinals started Sub-Districts against CWC.

The Renegades had previously encountered the Cardinals this season. It was a one-sided 3-0 in the Card's favor. More determined than ever, the Cards brought that energy back and quickly passed by the Renegades 3-0 again.

Tatum Ickes stole the show with 15 kills, two ace serves and eight digs; Gracie Williamson had 12 kills, three ace serves, one block, eight digs and one set assist; Anna Otte had seven kills and one block; Delaney Drueke had three kills, 10 digs and two set assists; Samantha Asche had one kill, one ace serve and three digs; Adyson Peterson had four ace serves, one block, 11 digs and 31 digs; and Bethany Leisy had one ace serve and 17 digs.

The girls wasted no time moving to the next opponent, Stuart, a regular this season. The Cards held the advantage from the start and coasted steadily from there. Never managing to break past the Cards' defense, the Broncos were forced to admit defeat.

Williamson took top honors with 15 kills, one ace serve, one block and seven digs; Ickes had 11 kills, five ace serves and 10 digs; Drueke had five kills, three ace serves, one block, eight digs and six set assists; Asche had five kills and one dig; Peterson had two kills, two ace serves, 11 digs and 30 set assists; Otte had two kills and one block; and Leisy had one kill and 12 digs.

After clearing Sub-Districts, the Cardinals visited a strong Garden County team for the first round of Districts.

The Cards dropped the ball in the opener, but pulled things together in the second stanza. With both teams on equal footing, the game was still anyone's for the taking.

The Eagles proved quickly why they had a 28-3 record on the season. They pulled ahead in the third, giving them the major advantage over the Cards. Knowing what was on the line, the girls gave it all they had. The Cards managed to put up 24 points in the finale, but the Eagles crossed the threshold just moments before.

It was an amazing match-up, but the Cards fell just short. With the win, Garden County moved on to face Dundy County-Stratton Thursday as part of the NSAA Volleyball Championships in Lincoln.

The Cardinals end their play with a 24-8 record on their campaign, an average of a 75% win-rate. Their longest win-streak was 14 games from Sept. 2 thru Oct. 2.

Congratulations to the Lady Cardinals for making it to Districts. Also a big shout out to Seniors Gracie Williamson, Samantha Asche and Anna Otte!
