St. Mary's Boys Fall To Summerland Tuesday

Dec 21, 2022 (0)

Cardinal Gage Hedstrom drives to the bucket in Tuesday night's game at St. Mary's.

The St. Mary's boys basketball team was on a hot win streak this season until just last week. Their first game against the Neligh-Oakdale Warriors last Tuesday wasn't the one to end the streak, however.

The game was well fought on both ends, but the Warriors just weren't able to keep up. Quarter one went to the Cards easy, but quarter two went to the Warriors by six points- an almost even match by this point in the game.

By quarter three, both teams were almost evenly tied, with St. Mary's having the slight advantage. This match could've gone either way, and the warriors tried their hardest, but they just couldn't get past the Card's impressive offensive capabilities and rock-solid defense.

Gage Hedstrom leads the Cards with 17 points, shooting one of five in three-pointers for 20 percent and six of 12 two-pointers for 50 percent, as well as seven rebounds; Dalton Alder 13 points and four rebounds; Isaac Everitt nine points and nine rebounds; Risken Dawson five points and four rebounds; Sam Barlow three points and one rebound; and Carson Dannenbring and Joe Wiese both two points and two rebounds each.

The Cardinals hosted the Summerland Bobcats this Monday and, unfortunately for them, lost their impressive win streak they were currently holding. Both teams going into the match had a 4-0 win/loss ratio, so it's really no surprise how close the final score of this match ended up.

Things got off to a rocky start at the beginning for the Cardinals, only scoring four points in the first quarter.  The second was better played, but the Bobcats still took the win, putting them 11 points ahead going into half.

The Cards put on the pressure and bounced back with a 13-4 win in third quarter. Going into the final, the Cards were only behind by two points, but they weren't able to push through and fell to the Bobcats by just five points at the end.

Leading the Cards again was Hedstrom with 15 points, shooting two of four three-pointers for 50 percent and four of 11 two-pointers for 36 percent, as well as 15 rebounds; Everitt 14 points and 11 rebounds; Alder five points and two rebounds; Dawson two points and three rebounds; Dannenbring three rebounds; and Barlow one rebound.

This was the final game of the boys 2022 basketball matches, but they will return Saturday, Jan. 7 to compete against the Anselmo-Merna Coyotes.
