Orchard — Robert "Bob" D. Meyer, 93, of Orchard, died Sunday, May 5, 2024 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Private family graveside services will be held at a later date at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in rural Royal. Per Bob's wishes, no public services will be held.

Robert D. “Bob” Meyer, “The Warden” was born Dec. 15, 1930 in Orchard to Theodore and Carrie (Noring) Meyer. Bob was the youngest of three children and was raised in rural Orchard with his two siblings James and Arlene. He attended school in Orchard and graduated from Orchard High School with the class of 1948.

Following high school, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served his country from 1949 to 1952. He served during the Korean war and held the title of Private S 1. He was honorably discharged in 1952.

On Dec. 23, 1950, Bob married the love of his life Laurel Jones. To this union five children were born Michael, William, Richard, Frank and Judy.

Bob and Laurel raised their children on their farm southwest of Orchard where Bob farmed and sold seed for Curry Seeds. His sons followed in his footsteps and farmed alongside him for several years until his “retirement.” Even after he was no longer actively farming, he was always involved in some aspect of the day-to-day operations of the farm whether it be running for parts, helping move equipment, giving rides, mowing the ditches or lending his advice about farming. Bob and Laurel loved to drive the countryside to check on the crops and enjoy an occasional Coors Light. He was a master storyteller and enjoyed sharing stories about growing up, his time in the military and farming with his family and friends.

Bob will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bob is survived by his sister Arlene Stevens of Parker, CO; four grandchildren Ritchie (Coni) Meyer of Page, Bobbi (Justin) Brandt of O'Neill, Bodie (Denise) Meyer of Orchard and Keelie (Juanita) Meyer of O'Neill; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and very special great-nephew Joe (Kassie) Meyer of Orchard.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ted and Carrie Meyer; wife Laurel; one brother James; four sons Michael, William, Richard and Frank; and one daughter Judy.
