Gresham — Rex Stanley Rhodes, 83, of Gresham, died peacefully Thursday, April 24, 2025 in Sioux Falls, SD. Graveside celebration of life services were held Saturday, May 3, 2025 at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Gresham. Memorials may be made to the Nebraska Humane Society in Rex's name. Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, SD was in charge of the arrangements. Rex, a beloved educator, outdoors man and family man, went to the big hunting lodge in the sky peacefully on April 24, 2025, at the age of 83. Born May 29, 1941, in Osceola, to Dale and Margaret Rhodes. The family moved to Gresham, where Rex and his brothers and sisters worked on the family farm. His passion marked Rex's life for learning, love of the outdoors and unwavering commitment to his community. Rex's passion for education led him on a distinguished academic path. He earned his bachelor's degree in education from Peru University, a master's degree from Kearney State College and a specialist in education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His dedication to teaching profoundly impacted countless students and colleagues throughout his career. He began teaching in O'Neill, where he taught science and coached the high school boys' basketball team. His path eventually led him to Omaha, where he made his most significant impact working for Millard Public Schools over an impressive 38-year career. Throughout his tenure, Rex served as principal of Hitchcock Elementary, Disney Elementary, Rockwell Elementary and had the honor of opening and retiring from Black Elk Elementary. Known for his fun and charismatic leadership, he touched the lives of countless students and colleagues alike. Beyond the school walls, Rex was a beloved figure in the neighborhood, affectionately known as the local pool manager, a good neighbor and a steadfast friend to all. Outside of education, Rex had a rich array of interests. He found solace and joy in the great outdoors. An avid hunter and fisherman, he cherished the peace and camaraderie found in nature. His active spirit found expression in running, the thoughtful challenge of jigsaw puzzles and he had a keen interest in history and astronomy. He also loved decorating his home with his stuffed bobcat, turkeys and his cherished elk head, often adorning it with hot pepper lights during Christmas—a reflection of his playful spirit and humor. Rex's legacy as a dedicated educator and passionate outdoorsman will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, and leaves behind a legacy of dedication, kindness and laughter. His life enriched those around him and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. May his memory be a source of comfort and strength to those who mourn his passing. In his own words, a simple sign-off that encapsulates his love: "Love you much." His loved ones deeply enriched Rex's life. Rex is survived by his wife Mary; his daughter Amie; his three grandchildren Garrett, Conner and Jessica; one brother Jerry; one sister Myra; former wife Susan, the mother of his children Brett and Amie; Rex was also the devoted companion to his beloved dog Jo. He was preceded in death by his son Brett; daughter Tonya; and six siblings Donna, Jean, Robert, Max, Evelyn and Dixie.
