Maryellen McKay

Maryellen McKay, age 89, of Atkinson, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at Parkside Manor in Stuart.

Visitation was held on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, from 3-8 p.m. with a 4 p.m.  Altar Society rosary and a 7 p.m. rosary at the Seger Funeral Home in
Atkinson.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson with Father Luke Steffes officiating. Music was provided by organist, Deb Kaup and soloist, Bonnie Krysl.

Pallbearers were Stephanie, Evan, Jordan and Reagan Larsen, Marshall and Kaylee McKay, Samantha McKay, Meghan Vogt, Lacey McKay and Garrett McKay.

Honorary pallbearers were John Keating, Lou Troshynski, Dorothy Peacock, Maxine Krieger, Marge Johnson, Rod Brotsky, Marge Ferris, Warren and Carol Funk, Dean and Jean Funk, Ron and Eleanor Shonka, Ron and Larry Beck, Dick Galyen, Ray Shaffer, Scott Shane, Rol and Nancy Everett, Wayne and Jean Pacha, Kathleen Steinhauser and Joe Langan.

Burial was at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Atkinson.

Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson was in charge of arrangements.

Maryellen (Miller) McKay was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on Aug. 7, 1922, to Lewis and Gertrude (Steinaur) Miller. She spent her childhood in Ewing and graduated from high school in 1940. She attended a business school in Omaha and later worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.

Maryellen married her high school best friend, E.C. (Ellsworth Clinton) McKay "Mick" on Feb. 28, 1942, in Omaha. To this union two sons were born, both while "Mick" was serving in the Army. Michael was born in Snohomish, WA, and Mark in Monterey, CA.

In 1946, they moved to Atkinson, where Mick was a part-time postal worker and insurance salesman. In 1960, Mick was appointed postmaster in Atkinson. He retired in 1980 and together they traveled each year during the winter months to Deming, NM. Mick passed away on June 20, 1990.

She was an excellent cook and loved playing bridge and bunko.

Maryellen is survived by her sons, Mike McKay and his wife, Carol of Center and Mark McKay and his wife, Sam of Gering; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; brother, Richard Miller and his wife, Marie and their son, Lewis of Watertown, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Mildred Saunto; brother, Marvin Miller; grandson, Kurt McKay; and nephew, Charles Miller.
