Fredrick William Grothe, age 70, of Emmet, passed away Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011, at Avera St. Anthony's Hospital in O'Neill. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at the Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Atkinson with Rev. April Peterson officiating. Music was provided by Robin Myer, singer and Caroline Poessnecker, organist. Pallbearers were Danial Grothe, Bo Myer, Jarold Myer, Dalton Dick, Dillon Dick, Willie Grothe, Davita Dick and Alicia Grothe. Honorary pallbearers were Jim and Bill Hoppe, Tom Welsh Sr., and Gene Farr. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Atkinson. Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson was in charge of arrangements. Fred was born on Jan. 3, 1941, in Emmet, to William Fredrick and Lydia (Hagel) Grothe. His education included through 12th grade and his occupation was a farmer/farming. Fred was married to Arlyce Jones on July 28, 1960, in Lake Andes, SD. He is survived by his wife, Arlyce of Emmet; his children, Debra Grothe of Yankton, SD, Danial Grothe and wife, Diane of Norfolk, Deanne Dick and husband, Sherwin of Inman and William Grothe and wife, Dawn of O'Neill; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Bernice Tooker and husband, Bob of O'Neill; two aunts, Elizabeth Gieblehaus of Longmont, CO, and Helen Hagel of Las Vegas, NV; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family requests memorials to Sanford Medical Center or St. John's Lutheran Church in Atkinson.
