Edward Hanley


Edward Hanley, age 91, of O'Neill passed away Monday evening Aug. 8, 2011, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

Visitation was from 4-9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, with a 8 p.m. Parish and Knights of Columbus Rosary.

Funeral Services were held at  10 a.m. on Monday Aug. 15, 2011, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in O’Neill with Father Francis Nigli officiating. 

  Music was provided by pianist Paula Havranek and Mary Ives and the St. Patrick's Choir.

Pallbearers were Pat Jansen, Tim Sullivan, Jack McGill, Jeff McGill, Brian Sullivan and Donald Sullivan.

Military Graveside Rites were conducted by the O’Neill American Legion Simonson Post #93. 

Ed was born July 11, 1920, at O’Neill to William and Margaret (Sullivan) Hanley. 

Ed and his brother Bob grew up on the family farm northeast of O’Neill and graduated from O’Neill Public High School. 

He entered the United States Army Air Corp on Oct. 23, 1942, serving his country during World War II. He received his honorable discharge on Jan. 24, 1946. 

Ed remained on the family farm continuing to ranch and farm until his retirement. He was a good steward of the land, and a friend to all that knew him.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in O’Neill, Knights of Columbus Council #701, O’Neill American Legion Simonson Post #93, and he served as a member of the St. Anthony’s Hospital Board.

Ed is survived by cousins; Nan (Sullivan) McGill of Omaha, Eugene Sullivan of Sioux Falls, SD  and Leora Sullivan of Elgin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Memorials may be directed to St. Anthony’s Hospital Foundation, Evergreen Assisted Living or the Golden Age Center in O’Neill.
