EAGLE PRESLEY HEISS (2) races down the court while a Crofton player is hot on her trail. The Eagles were taken out by Crofton 77-40.

Last week was an exciting time in the world of high school basketball, as the 2024 Mid-States Conference Tournament was officially hosted Monday, Jan. 29 at 6:00 p.m. Since the Eagles took down Wayne on Saturday, Jan. 27, they competed in the first round of Mid-States.

In their first match-up the Eagles were pitted against a mighty Crofton team. Quarter one gave the Eagles a major lead, downing the Warriors 17-8. This wouldn't last however, as directly after the Warriors stomped the Eagles 27-4 to even the score and then some.

The third quarter added some extra hurt with the Eagles falling behind a further 12 points. Despite a guaranteed victory, the Warriors continued to tear into the Eagles, taking them down 77-40 in the end.

Hannah Hilker scored the most with nine points, shooting two of seven two-pointers for 29 percent. Hilker also had one rebound and one steal; Presley Heiss had eight points, three rebounds and one steal; Ashley Sidak eight points; Olivia Young six points, one rebound and one steal; Bergyn Classen four points, five rebounds and one steal; Autumn Hilker three points and two steals; Serena Chavez two points, one rebound and one steal; and Brena Gdanitz one rebound.

With that loss, the Eagles would face the loser of another Mid-States match to determine the final ranking. The Eagles battled Norfolk Catholic at GACC on Thursday, Feb. 1 and fell in a close 59-49 match.

From the start, things didn't look too hot for the Eagles, as the Knights took an early 17-10 lead. From there, the Knights continued to pile up more points, all while the Eagles kept up a steady pace to stay just behind.

The fourth quarter saw the Eagles make one last effort to stay in the game. They kicked things into high gear and took the final 18-13. This wouldn't be enough to turn the game in their favor, but the Eagles made a good effort in the Mid-States Conference.

Hannah Hilker made a great effort with 23 points, shooting five of 13 three-pointers for 38 percent and one of three two-pointers for 33 percent. Hilker also had one rebound and one steal. Classen eight points and six rebounds; Young eight points, two rebounds and one steal; Heiss six points and five rebounds; Autumn Hilker four points and three rebounds; Sidak two rebounds; and Rylee Selby one rebound.
