Linda M.

 (Serck) Barnes

Linda Marie (Serck) Barnes, age 73, of Cypress, CA, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Services and burial took place on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress, CA.

Linda was born in Atkinson on Sept. 19, 1939, the third daughter of William F. and Etta M. (Reimers) Serck. She attended elementary school in O'Neill and Emmet and graduated from O'Neill High School in 1957.

After graduation she attended Wayne State Teachers College for one year and then transferred to Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, graduating summa cum laude in 1961.

Linda met and married her husband Dan, a WWII D-Day veteran, in Denver, CO, in 1961. They moved to Philadelphia, PA, where she served as a graduate assistant and earned her masters degree in English at Temple University. Daughter, Patricia Lynn, was born in Philadelphia on July 4, 1962.

The family moved to St. George, Utah where Linda taught English at Dixie Junior College for one year. Their second daughter Kerry K. was born here. Then they went on to southern California where Linda taught English at Buena Park High School for 38 years.

Linda took early retirement in 2002 so that she and her sister, Leah, could travel. Both enjoyed their trips to England, Ireland and many parts of the eastern United States.

Favorite activities of this transplanted Nebraska native were watching the hundreds of birds in her back yard, raising lovely roses, making juice from her own oranges, attending Cinemateque productions at historic theaters in Hollywood and Santa Monica, attending her grandchildren's events, texting her Augustana College "gang," traveling with Leah, promoting the Cancer Warrior t-shirts that she designed and following Husker football.

Linda is survived by her daughters, Patricia Barnes and Kerry Thomas; son-in-law, Frank Thomas; grandchildren, Erik and Kristen Thomas; sister, Dr. Leah Serck of Seward and brother-in-law, Saideia Hasen of Sacramento, CA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan; her parents; a sister, Leona and nephew, Omar Hasen.

Memorials may be made to the Sarcoma Foundation of America.
