Rural Development Awards $2.5 Million to City of Atkinson For Wastewater System

USDA Rural Development announces that the City of Atkinson will receive $2.5 million to construct a new lift station and mechanical treatment plant.

"We are pleased to announce that the City of Atkinson is the recipient of USDA Rural Development funds that will provide for a new sanitary sewer system for the City.  The system will provide for a safe and sanitary environment not only for today but for the future," said Nebraska State Director Maxine Moul, USDA Rural Development.

"To remain in compliance with the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality regulations, a new sewer plant is being required for the City of Atkinson.  With the assistance of USDA Rural Development, this sewer project will be more affordable to the residents of Atkinson," said Mayor David Fredrick, City of Atkinson.

The new sewer project is needed as the current system has outlived its design life and will exceed e. coli and ammonia limits in the proposed 2012 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit.

"The City's sanitary sewer improvement project will result in a reliable wastewater treatment system that will allow the City to remain in compliance and provide for a healthier environment," said area specialist Roberta Mues, USDA Rural Development.

The loan of $1,726,000 and grant of $774,000 are provided through the USDA Rural Development Water and Wastewater Loan and Grant program.  The loan terms are 20 years at 2.5 percent rate of interest.  For more information contact Roberta Mues (308) 237-3118 ext. 112
