The O'Neill City Council met in regular session on Monday, Nov. 3, with two council members absent. The Council heard from some residents who are looking to host a demolition derby east of town, by the dump. The group will have an organization helping them with the event, which could be on the Sunday of Summerfest. The Council then took action on repainting the Shamrock after Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Council voted not to repaint the Shamrock due to the upcoming winter season, and the color from Domestic Violence Month was already fading. The Council approved Michael Cafaro and Monica Huber as members of the O'Neill Fire Department. The Council then held a public hearing to consider a new liquor license for Dirty Hands in the Handlebend Building. The Council heard from City Street Superintendent Greg Walters about Semi spillage on Douglas. Walters told the Council that spillage from a Semi truck hauling Distillers' grain. "The City Street Cleaner is not made to deal with this kind of waste. It plugs up the machinery and, if not addressed, will cost the City in repair bills. If we hadn't gotten it cleaned up, the City Street Cleaner could have cost the City $5000 or $6,000," said Walters. The Council considered the problem and talked with Boyd Strope. The City can fine them for littering or spilling. Strope told the Council, "We can give them a misdemeanor, but that only goes up to $500. If you go to small claims court for repairs to the Street Sweeper, you will incur legal fees, depending on the amount, which will more than likely be a wash. The Council then approved LB-840 funding requests for some funds to help put up new signs. The Council adjourned around 7 p.m.
