O'Neill Splits Two Against Mid State Foes

Derrick Hostert  makes a break for the bucket in action on Saturday against Wayne.

Last Tuesday O'Neill played host to Pierce and  clipped the Bluejays by a score of 48-39. Pierce got on top early and took a three point lead heading into halftime, with the third quarter going back and forth.  It wasn't until the fourth quarter when the Eagles finally pulled ahead and stayed there, outscoring the Bluejays by 11 points in the final stanza. Leading the way for O'Neill was Charley Burtwistle who finished with a game high 21 points, followed by Derrick Hostert and Michael Hedlund each with 10.  Hedlund cleared the boards for the home team with eight carems and Brock Schueth, only playing until early third quarter due to an injury, ripped down six. Hostert continued his defensive ways by stealing away six Bluejay possessions as Donnie Taylor controlled the paint to limit Pierce's post touches. "It was another cold night for us shooting, but we fought all night and stuck together to get the win.  It's these types of games that we can really learn and grow from," commented Coach Kallhoff.

On Saturday the Wayne Bluedevils swept through town and knocked the Eagles off 55-51.  It was back and forth the entire first half with neither team really establishing control, but the third quarter proved to be all Wayne as they outscored O'Neill 14-5. Despite the lopsided third, the Eagles clawed their way back to within two points, but it was too little too late as Wayne handed O'Neill its first loss on the season.

"This was a great game and we expect to win these, but as with any loss we will learn from it and move forward," said Coach Kallhoff.  Leading scorers on the night were Charley Burtwistle with 19 followed closely by Derrick Hostert's 14, Michael Hedlund eight, Cody Belzer five  and Riley Wakefield with five.  It was Wakefield's presence in the second half that provided a much needed spark to get the Eagles back in the game. Leading rebounders were Burtwistle with eight, Hostert seven and Hedlund five.
