Lady Cardinals Pick-up Two Big Wins On The Road

St. Mary's traveled east and faced a very physical Creighton Lady Bulldog team on their home court. The Lady Cards jumped out to a quick 13-0 run, but Creighton battled back and ended the first quarter only down 17-10.

Creighton  continued to work their way back to within striking distance and close the scoring gap. SMH was able to start knocking down some shots after Creighton got within three points and took a 35-21 lead into half-time.

The Bulldogs and Cardinals kept battling it out as both teams pushed  the ball up and down the court. In the end St. Mary's Lady Cardinals came away with an 82-42 victory, led by Brooke Bauer's 29 points and eight rebounds. Bridget Schneider and Emily Everitt also reached double figures with 14 and 11 points.

As a team the Lady Cards shot 15-22 from the charity stripe for 68% while creighton shot 11-23 for 48%. Schneider also dished out seven assists from her point guard position. The entire team played very good defense and contributed in many ways to get another victory.

In the junior varsity game SMH was able to get a three quarter win against the young Lady Bulldogs with a final score of 64-15. Emily Pongratz, Krissy Krotter and Alejandra Kersenbrock all had five steals and Sydney Hupp and Alejandra had 13 points apiece. Tracy Chvala led all rebounders with seven, followed by Addie Wetzel with five. 

Thursday the Lady Cards headed west to face the Stuart Lady Broncos. junior varsity started things off with a 38-3 victory. The team was led by Riley Sibbel with 11 points and Mackenzie Wecker had four steals and three assists. The win improves SMH junior varsity to a 15-0 on the season. In the Varsity game St. Mary's took the victory with a win of 77 to  Stuart's 25 points. Stuart caused a lot of problems in the first half as they out rebounded the Cards on numerous occasions. It wasn't until the second half when SMH started to gain the advantage. 

Addie Wetzel went to work as lead rebounder with 13 rebounds. Brooke Bauer led SMH with 14 points. Additionally 14 other team members recorded points as well.

Stuart shot 13-24 from the free throw line and SMH shot 6-10. St. Mary's headed into the Niobrara Valley Conference Tournament with a 15-1 record and played Niobrara-Verdigre Tuesday evening at St. Mary's High School.
