By assistant coach Terry Viterna Niobrara Valley Conference teams squared off here in O'Neill last Tuesday evening for an inter-conference game. The St. Mary's Lady Cardinals swept both games against the Niobrara-Verdigre Lady Cougars. In varsity action SMH had a tough struggle with Niobrara-Verdigre for the first quarter. The Lady Cougars were pretty scrappy as SMH held on to a 16-10 first period lead. During the second period SMH started to fly away from the cats, going into half with a 24-11 lead. St. Mary's depth proved to be more than Niobrara-Verdigre could handle as the lead was extended to 49-27 after three quarters. SMH was able to run their half court offense most of the fourth quarter and drop in 22 points, giving them a 87-37 win. This win improves St. Mary's record to 3-0. Brooke Bauer led St. Mary's in scoring with 24 points followed by Emily Everitt with 11. Freshman post player Kaylee Harvey came in off the bench and grabbed five rebounds and put in nine points. With 15 Lady Cardinals seeing playing time in this game it truly was a team effort. Emily Everitt, Erin Boyle and Sydney Hupp accounted for six blocked shots. Addie Wetzel led all rebounders with nine. Bridgett Schneider handed out a team high four assists. Mackenzie Wecker and Brooke Bauer combined for 10 steals. Every player accounted for the win and posted stats for the team. Next action is on the road against the Neligh-Oakdale Warriors. In junior varsity play SMH out-scored Niobrara-Verdigre 43-16. Tracy Chvala had the hot hand as she ripped the nets for 15 points. Sydney Hupp was close behind with 10 points. These two freshman also controlled the boards as they hauled in 21 rebounds. As a team we recorded 25 steals against the young cats, led by Riley Sibbel with 10.
