Depko Places At State Meet

Allison Depko

Allison Depko participated in the Class C state golf tournament at Quail Run in Columbus on Monday, October 10th and Tuesday, October 11th.  This was her third opportunity to participate at the state golf meet and her goal was to finish in the top fifteen to receive a medal.  On Monday, Allison hit the ball fantastic off the tee, however she struggled with her approach shots and chipping.

Starting out with a 49 on the front nine, she gained her composer and finished with a 44 on the back.  This gave her a one day total of 93 and tied for sixteenth after the first day.  Despite her struggles on day one, her goal was still within reach.  Beginning day two, Allison focused on what she needed to do to correct the mistakes.

She spent some extra time on the driving range working on her short iron shots and chipping.  Coach Fernau has watched Allison play golf for four years and had never seen her  play any better than she did on her first eleven holes.  After the front nine, Allison had seven pars and two bogeys for a 38.  This tied the second lowest score on the front nine for the tournament and it moved her from a tie for sixteenth place to having a chance to finish in the top ten.  Allison parred hole number ten and eleven.  On hole twelve, her drive landed in the trees and she ended up with a triple bogie.

On the last six holes, Allison was unable to get a par, however her consistency allowed her to finish without anything worse than a double bogey.  She finished with a 47 on the back nine and a eighteen hole score of an 85.  This was the fifth lowest score of the day and moved her from sixteenth place to ninth.  Allison becomes the second girl's golfer from O'Neill to place at the state meet.  Molly Johnson placed 6th in 2001.

In her four years of golf at O'Neill High, she has place in 29 out of 32 tournaments with top five finishes in 26 of them.  The only tournament she did not place in the top ten was at districts in 2009 and the state meets in 2008 and 2010.  Congratulation to Allison for a great career.
