St. Mary's Lady Cardinals Kick Off New Year's Well

Jan 10, 2024 (0)

Last week was the start of a new year, and with it came a few great games from the Cardinals. Their first game was played on Jan. 4 when they invited EPPJ to play.

The opener gave the Cardinals a good head start when they took it 16-13. Not letting the advantage slip, the Cards played consistently and put up 13 and held the Wolfpack to  just eight in quarters two and three.

The final act was nothing crazy, just a simple 15-13 to push the Cards further ahead of the game.

Leading the Cardinals was Lorissa Reiman with her 16 points, shooting eight of 13 two-pointers for 62 percent. Reiman also had 16 rebounds; Mya Hedstrom just behind with 14 points, six rebounds and two steals; Gracie Williamson had 12 points, eight rebounds and one steal; Alissa Brabec eight points and two rebounds; and Annabelle Barlow seven points, one rebound and two steals.

After a short two day break, the girls challenged the McCool Junction Mustangs and defeated them in a close 41-39 match-up.

Quarter one set the stage for the game, with both teams putting up 10 points. The Cards took a four-point lead in the next, putting them in a good spot. The Mustangs were giving the Cards a hard time, but the home-team still managed to take the third by one point. Realizing it was their last chance, the Mustangs kicked it into high gear in the final. They overtook the Cardinals 12-9, but they still were behind overall by just two points.

Mya Hedstrom carried her team to victory with 27 points, shooting two of two three-pointers for 100 percent and seven of 10 two-pointers for 70 percent. Hedstrom also had eight rebounds and eight steals; Brabec had eight points and two steals; Reiman four points, six rebounds and one steal; Barlow two points, three rebounds and one steal; Williamson four rebounds and two steals; and Pyper Ickes two rebounds and one steal.
