SMH Volleyball Season 2-0 Win Streak

Aug 30, 2023 (0)

SMH Cardinal - Mya Hedstrom (11) blocks a shot from a Bloomfield player on Thursday, Aug. 24

The 2023-2024 Volleyball season is off to a stellar start for St. Mary's high school. So far they are undefeated, 2-0.

Thursday, August 24 was the Cardinal's first match when they hosted the Wausa Vikings. This was an incredibly close call, but the Cards just barely had the edge needed to take the win against the opposition. The final score was 2-1; 25-22, 24-26 and 25-23.

Set one was a good showing from either team, with the Cards narrowly taking it, 25-22. The second set turned the game into a real nail-biter. The Vikings snuck in a close win, bringing them only one point behind the Cardinals.

It was all up to this final set- and it could easily go either way. In the end, though, the Cards proved they had the upper hand the whole time. They won the final set by just two points, 25-23. This was an incredibly close game the whole way through.

Lorissa Reiman took top spot with 12 kills, two blocks and 14 digs; Mya Hedstrom follows with eight kills, three blocks and 16 digs; Gracie Williamson six kills and three digs; Pyper Ickes three kills, one block, eight digs and one set assist; Joslyn Eby two kills, two blocks, seven blocks and two set assists; Emma Otte two kills, 11 digs and one set assist; Alissa Brabec one kill, 11 digs and 27 set assists; Hannah Gleason one kill and two digs; Annabelle Barlow seven digs and one set assist.

That same day, the Cardinals faced off against the Bloomfield Bees and took another victory, 2-0; 25-20 and 25-6.

The opening set looked to be a promising start for both teams, with the Bees falling behind by five points, 25-20. This was certainly not impossible to comeback from, but the Bees would have to put some work in.

In the second and final set the Cardinals matched their first score of 25 points. The Bees weren't able to keep up with the Cards and fell behind by a staggering 19 points.

Hedstrom snuck her way to top place with nine kills, one block, six digs and one set assist; Reiman six kills, six digs and one set assist; Williamson five kills and one block; Ickes three kills, 11 digs and one set assist; Eby two kills and one set assist; Brabec one kill, seven digs and 21 set assists; Otte six digs; Barlow one dig.

These were certainly some good games from the Cardinal girls to open the season. Last year the team had an 85% win rate. Time will only tell if they have what it takes this year to match or even surpass such an impressive number.
