SMH Cardinal - Aydan Kloppenborg (10) wraps on a Wausa player on Friday night in O'Neill.

St. Mary's football started the same day as OHS football. Unfortunately for the St. Mary's Cardinals, they also had much of the same outcome in their first game. They hosted the Wausa Vikings and lost 30-12.

Quarter one could've been better, but it also could've been worse, ending in a two point disadvantage for the Cardinals. The following quarter was when the Cards fate was pretty much sealed. They fell behind an additional eight points when they lost 8-0.

Quarter three was a rare no win no loss quarter; neither team scored any points. While they still had a chance up to this point, quarter four was the final nail in the coffin for the Cards. The 14-6 quarter was easily enough to crown the Vikings the victor of this match.

Gage Hedstrom was at the top of this game with nine carries for 27 yards, one touchdown and 21 tackles; Ben Barlow two carries for five yards and nine tackles and one touchdown; Aydan Kloppenborg two carries for two yards and 21 tackles; Drake Berg one carry for three yards and 11 tackles; Eli Banks 11 tackles, Jack Gydesen nine tackles, Carson Dannenbring and Sam Barlow seven tackles each; Dalton Herley five tackles; Jace Rosenkrans and Matthew Koehlmoos three tackles each; Ruger Kraft two tackles; Carter Cole one tackle.

The Cardinals are starting with a lot of new players this year, so they may need some more experience before they are able to really show what they can do. Their next match will see them traveling to Randolph on Friday, September 1.
