Last Friday the O'Neill Eagles were on the road against Mid State Conference foe Boone Central/Newman Grove and brought home a tough three point win, 48-45.

The first quarter was back and forth with each squad tallying 15 points, but the second stanza was all Eagles as they held the Cardinals to four points while racing to a six point halftime lead. "We had a great first half, which really helped our confidence and guided us through some of the ups and downs of the second half," commented Coach Kallhoff.  This proved to be crucial as Boone would go on a substantial run, building a lead as much as eight points before Charley Burtwistle buried a couple deep three's to kick start the Eagles fourth quarter.  "It was great to see the boys moving the ball around and finding our hot shooter, but our defense is what won us this game," added Coach Kallhoff.

Derrick Hostert came through numerous times with some clutch steals to halt any hope the Cardinals had at regaining the lead. With three seconds to go Boone had a look for the tie but the shot went long and the Eagles were victorious. Leading all scorers was Hostert with 20 who also led the team with eight rebounds, six assists, and five steals to round out his best performance of the year so far.  Burtwistle added 19 points, 11 of which came in the last stanza, to go along with his six rebounds.  Michael Hedlund five points, four rebounds and four assists and Donnie Taylor with six boards played pivotal roles locking down Boones best offensive threats to help in the winning effort.

The Eagles had little time to rest as they welcomed the Wolfpack of Elgin Public/Pope John to town on Saturday but played well and got the win 65-51. "I was happy to see our boys come out against a very physical EPPJ team and set the tone early because we have struggled in the past with bouncing back after tough Mid State games the night before," said Coach Kallhoff.

O'Neill used a balanced attack to accomplish this feat with Derrick Hostert firing on all cylinders and leading all scorers with back to back nights of 20 points, followed by Charley Burtwistle with 17, Michael Hedlund 13, Donnie Taylor seven, Jacob Emme four, Nate Gotschall two, and Jackson Latzel two. The Eagles were very aggressive offensively, which led to numerous free throw opportunities. In fact, six Eagles made it to the charity strip and no one missed, the team was a perfect 20 for 20. The Eagles finished a three game span by traveling to West Point on Monday playing the Guardian Angels and play again Thursday at home against  Ainsworth.
