Lady Cardinal Girls Get Win Over Ainsworth

Jan 14, 2026 (0)

ST. MARY'S GRACIE WILLIAMSON drives into the bucket against an Ainsworth defender in last Friday's, Jan. 9 game.

With the defeat from Battle Creek at the end of 2025, the St. Mary's lady Cardinals would have to wait for over one week to play ball again. Their time came last Thursday, Jan. 8 when they hosted Elgin/Pope John.

It was all defense in the opening, with neither team making significant strides, but the Wolfpack did snag it by three points. Downed another point in the second stanza, the Cards were falling further by the minute. It was the third where the Cards got some time in the spotlight when they took a small step toward closing the gap. In the end, the Wolfpack still overpowered the Cards, who were forced to accept another devastating loss.

Gracie Williamson took the top spot with nine points, shooting three of nine three-pointers for 33%, as well as nine rebounds; Emerson Mlnarik also with nine points, seven rebounds and two steals; Tatum Ickes had seven points, four rebounds and one steal; Adyson Peterson had six points and two steals; and Cherish Williamson had five points, six rebounds and three steals.

The next day, Friday, Jan. 9, the girls once again invited a competitor, this time being Ainsworth.

Determined now more than ever, the Cardinal girls took the reins and ran with it. There were a few close calls here and there, but the Cards had the clear power advantage. By the end, the Bulldogs were swept away by the home team, who achieved their second clean 4-0 sweep of the season.

Ickes stole the show with 18 points, shooting seven of 10 two-pointers for 70%, as well as 11 rebounds and two steals; C. Williamson backed her up with 14 points and eight rebounds; Peterson also with 14 points and four rebounds; Mlnarik had 11 points, eight rebounds and one steal; G. Williamson had six points, six rebounds and one steal; and Bethany Leisy one steal.
