The Village of Ewing Board of Trustees announced the 2026 inductees into the Ewing Hall of Fame on Sunday, May 24 at the Fun Fest Parade: Ralph and Hazel Munn were chosen as this years selectees. Ralph and Hazel were both raised in small communities. Hazel in Ewing and Ralph in Streater, Illinois. Both headed to California after high school. Ralph had become a store manager at a Safeway. Hazel was a housemaid for Fred Astaire, the famous dancer and singer. Ralph and Hazel married in 1939. Ralph was inducted into the Army in January 1943. In 1944, on a mission, his plane was shot down. He was reported missing and was a prisoner of war until being liberated by the British in May of 1945. In 1950, the couple returned to Ewing and purchased a grocery store, then called the Red and White Market. Later, the name was changed to Ralphs Market. At first, the family lived in a residence at the back of the store, but as they grew, they moved to a home on the north edge of town. Ralph was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Knights of Columbus. Meanwhile, Hazel was active in the church and school activities. Later, each of the four children took their turn working in the store. At that time, helping out was the best way to spend time with mom and dad, since they worked so many long hours in the family business. The Ewing community was responsible for Ralph's Market's success. Ralph's mission was to give great customer service, support the community, and help those in need. He was a giving soul. In his time, he knew what hunger was, and thus he was determined to help feed those in need and short on funds. We warmly welcome the families of our inductees present here today—children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Your willingness to share in their lives and help preserve the legacy we remember today is deeply appreciated.
