Eagles Have Successful Week's Play

Feb 14, 2024 (0)

After a heavy-hitting loss in the Mid-States tournament, the Eagles were looking to get some wins. Last week they faced three schools and were successful against all three.

Their first match-up was against Creighton last Monday, Feb. 5 where the Eagles took the win 81-51.

They came out hot from the beginning, taking an early 17-7 lead over the Bulldogs. Quarter two was a different story; the teams fought neck and neck, but the Bulldogs narrowly came out on top, 14-13.

Moving into half and the Eagles were still in a good spot. The third quarter saw the Eagles dominate by a score of 30-18 to put them far ahead. In the final, the Eagles added an additional 21 points to further cement their place in first.

Turner Heiss stole the show with 33 points, shooting two of four three-pointers and eight of 11 two-pointers. Heiss also had seven rebounds and one steal; Colton Osborne had 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals; Drew Morrow close with 14 points, two rebounds and two steals; Ryder Pokorny had 10 points, two rebounds and two steals; Porter Mathews with four points and five rebounds; Grant Dusatko three points and nine rebounds; Caleb Laursen three points; Brady Eichelberger four rebounds and two steals; Trevor Alder one rebound and one steal; and Nate Brown one rebound.

One day passed and the Eagles were ready for their next competitor. They traveled to Plainview Feb. 6 and won by a close 56-52 final score.

The game started the same way it ended; with the Eagles just barely taking the win in a close 11-9 opening. The match was spun on it's head when the Pirates took the second quarter 13-7 to put them in the lead temporarily.

Quarter three already saw the end of the Pirates reign as the Eagles yet again turned it around with a five-point win. The scoreboard now read 36-35 and there was limited time to decide a final victor. Given the rest of the match, it's no surprise it ended in a tough fight, but the Eagles did manage to take the lead and won the game 56-52 in the end.

Drew Morrow was the star with 22 points, shooting two of eight three-pointers and six of seven two-pointers. Morrow also had three rebounds and one steal; Osborne had 10 points and six rebounds; Pokorny close with 10 points, one rebound and one steal; Heiss not far with nine points, four rebounds and two steals; Eichelberger had three points, six rebounds and one steal; Evan Kopecky two points; Alder five rebounds and one steal; and Dusatko one rebound.

The Eagles were afforded a two-day break, but on Friday, Feb. 9 they were back at it when they hosted Ord and sent them home 63-52.

The Eagles came out hot at the beginning, crushing the Chanticleers 22-10. Already trailing, the Chanticleers were determined to get back in the game. They gave it their all and bested the Eagles in quarter two 14-12.

By the halfway mark, the Eagles were still sitting good, and quarter three did their opponent no favors when they beat them 11-10. The final was a high-scoring stalemate to bring this mostly even match to a close. The Eagles took the win 63-52 thanks to the strong beginning act.

Turner Heiss again scored high with 20 points, shooting one of three three-pointers and six of 14 two-pointers. Heiss also had three rebounds and two steals; Morrow just behind with 17 points and nine rebounds; Eichelberger had seven points, seven rebounds and one steal; Alder also with seven points, two rebounds and one steal; Osborne close behind with six points and six rebounds; Dusatko had five points and four rebounds; Pokorny one point and one steal; and Mathews one rebound.
