Lady Eagles Face Tough Opponents

ALEX HEDLUND sets the ball for Molly Shane in last weeks game against Wagner in O'Neill.

O'Neill Volleyball Triangular

O'Neill vs Valentine - Game 1

O'Neill avenged their loss to Valentine from earlier this year defeating the Badgers in two sets 25-16 and 25-18.

In the first set it was tight for a short time with Eagles leading only 9-8 after one rotation.  In the second rotation O'Neill was able to get a couple of runs together to pull ahead and get the win 25-16.

O'Neill's second set jumped to a sizable  lead with eight straight points from Lindsey Appleby.  She served six ace serves out of eight good jump serves.   After one rotation the Eagles were up 17-10 and kept a good lead through the end 25-18.

Many of the Eagles put the ball down against the Badgers.  Alex Hedlund had five kills followed by Shane, L. Appleby, and Alyssa Sobotka with four kills.  Danielson and K. Appleby added two kills to the mix.

Defensively Hedlund had the only blocks with two and she picked up three digs.  Five digs for Kelsey Appleby and Alyssa Sobotka, and four digs for Molly Shane.  Hedlund, Danielson, and L. Appleby all had three digs apiece.

Kelsey Appleby handled the setting duties with 15 set assists.

"The team came out ready to play this time against Valentine—we had something to prove after our loss to them a couple of weeks ago," said Coach Appleby.

Ord vs Valentine - Game 2

Ord defeated Valentine in two sets this match 25-19 and 25-21.

O'Neill vs Ord - Game 3

Ord came out strong against the Eagles with a two set victory in the third game:  13-25 and 25-17.

"We had a sluggish start to this game, and it was partly because Ord placed serves very well causing us to get out of system," said Coach Appleby.  "I was happy that we were able to bounce back and play our game the second set, even though, we came up short."

Alex Hedlund hit .316 against the Chants with 18/19 spikes for seven kills to top the hitting chart.  Kelsey Appleby followed with .286 attacking with 6/7 attempts for three kills, and Molly Shane hit .182 with 9/11 attempts and four kills.

Molly Shane led with 10 digs followed by Kelsey Appleby and Alex Hedlund with seven digs and five digs respectively.

Alyssa Sobotka had two ace serves while Alex Hedlund had one. Kelsey Appleby had 13 set assists for the game.

O'Neill vs. Wagner, SD

The Eagles start out strong against the Red Raiders winning the first set.  The next three sets were very competitive and a close battle, but the Eagles couldn't quite get the victory.  Scores were:  25-16, 24-26, 25-18, and 27-29.

The first set O'Neill got a sizable lead and kept it the entire set.  The Eagles had six service aces this set with Alyssa Sobotka and Alex Hedlund serving up two aces each followed by both Applebys with one apiece.

Set two was a battle with a tie score of 12-12 after one complete rotation and Wagner pulled ahead temporarily at 19-16.  O'Neill fought back to tie it 20-20 and it continued back and forth until the end 24-26.

In the third set the Eagles were up by one 14-13 after one full rotation.  In the next rotation the Red Raiders scored six straight to pull ahead and keep the lead.  The Eagles had some unforced errors in that stretch that hurt losing 25-18.

The fourth set was a long battle going almost three complete rotations.  The Eagles had a chance for game point twice before the Red Raiders scored two consecutive points back to back for the match 29-27.

Alex Hedlund was the only hitter in double digits for kills leading the team with 15 kills.  Molly Shane added seven kills, Lindsey Appleby had five kills, and Katie Danielson and Alyssa Sobotka had four kills apiece.  Kelsey Appleby set 100/103 sets for 34 assists and two kills on second contact.

Defensively Molly Shane led with 13 digs, followed by Kelsey Appleby with 12 digs, and Katie Danielson had 10 digs.  Serve Receive was led by Lindsey Appleby with 20 to the setter.  Danielson and Hedlund had 10 and 9 good serve receives respectively.

Hedlund had four blocks at the net while Shane, Danielson, and both Applebys had one block.

"We had opportunities to win the second and fourth sets, and we need to find ways to finish these types of games," said Coach Kaye Appleby.  "We do a lot of good things and are making progress."
