Cardinals Open Strong Against Leigh On Friday


TAIT SIBBEL breaks free of a Leigh defender in last Friday evenings season opener.


The St. Mary's Cardinals hit the road for their season opener against Leigh.

The Cards were not contested in the match putting up a 49-0 win.

Tait Sibbel threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to David Shields to put the Cards on the board first followed by Sibbel running in the two point conversion. The Cards scored twice more in the first quarter with a 40-yard run by Sibbel and Ty Eiler on a 10-yard run for the touchdown.

The Cards scored twice in the second quarter when Luke Loecker ran in a 1-yard touchdown and Tait Sibbel ran in the other touchdown for 13 more points before the half. The Cards went into the half leading 35-0.

The second half was all Cardinals with St. Mary's scoring in the third quarter when David Shields ran a 10-yard touchdown in for six. The final score of the game was a short dash into the end zone by Jared Tomjack followed by Anthony Harvey for the conversion to give the Cards a 49 point win.

Top rushers in the game were Jared Tomjack with 99 yards and Tait Sibbel with 91 yards. Sibbel was four for five throwing for 109 yards, while Logan Went of Leigh threw four for 10 for 17 yards. Leading the Cardinal defense was Kyle Loecker with seven. The Cards will face Clearwater/Orchard this Saturday in O'Neill with a 8:00 p.m. kick off.
