Cards Devour Giltner Hornets

The St. Mary's boys packed up their troop and hit the road last Thursday traveling to Giltner and coming away with a solid 48-16  win. The Hornets were 1-1 going into the match winning over Deshler in week one and falling to Kenesaw in their game two.

The Cardinals were originally supposed to play Osmond but due to a shortage of players the game was scrapped and picked up the away game.

The Cards took charge against the unknown opponent putting up 14 points in the first quarter with the Cards driving down to the Hornets goal and Aydan Kloppenborg running in a one yard touchdown and Gage Hedstrom hit Kloppenborg for the two-point conversion.  Kloppenborg got the second Cardinals score of the quarter on a 12 yard run. The Hornets got into the end-zone with eight of their own points.

The Cards lead at the half 20-6. Hedstrom hit Carson Dannenbring on a 10 yard touchdown pass six in the second quarter for the only score in the second. 

The third quarter was huge for the  Cardinals, racking up 22 unanswered points on the Hornets and sealing the game. Kloppenborg had a 66 yard kickoff return for a touchdown with Hedstrom running in the conversion. Hedstrom hit Ben Barlow for a quick six into the end-zone. And after a short drive Hedstrom ran in six for the Cards for the last scoring in the third.

Giltner put in one more score in the fourth for eight points with the Cards contributing six from Hedstrom on a one yard run to end the game.

Hedstrom had 16 throws for nine completions and two touchdowns.

Leading the rushing was Hedstrom with 23 carries for 79 yards and two touchdowns; Kloppenborg 13 carries for 78 yards and two touchdowns; Jace Rosenkrans three carries for 20 yards; and Logan Brabec three carries for 21 yards. 

Leading receivers for the Cards were Dannenbring with four receptions for 39 yards and one touchdown;  Ben Barlow two receptions for 28 yards and one touchdown; Rosenkrans one catch for five yards and Kloppenborg one catch for two yards.

The Cardinal defense was led by Drake Berg with 11 tackles, Rosenkrans with 10 tackles, Hedstrom nine tackles, Barlow, Kloppenborg and Dalton Herley five tackles, Eli Banks and Sam Barlow four tackles, and Jack Gydesen two tackles.
