Dec 13, 2023 (0)

The St. Mary's Cardinal boys sweeped their competition last week, giving them a comfortable 100% win rate overall to this point in the season. Last week's first competitor came when Niobrara hosted the Cardinals on Tuesday, Dec. 5 and were taken down 81-40.

The Cardinals made an early statement, trouncing the Cougars 32-8 first quarter. Quarter two was close, but the Cards took it by three points.

The score was now 45-18 and the Cards weren't slowing down. Quarter three kept the pressure on as the Cougars fell behind an extra 11 points. The final quarter was close, but again ended in a three-point advantage for the Cardinals. With it, they won the match 81-40

Ben Barlow ended with 20 points, shooting two of three three-pointers for 67 percent and six of eight two-pointers for 75 percent. Barlow also had three rebounds and one steal. Eli Banks had 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals; Max Berg 13 points and six rebounds; James Eby 12 points, two rebounds and one steal; Logan Brabec 10 points, three rebounds and one steal; Gage Hedstrom nine points and six rebounds; Sam Barlow two points and four rebounds; Xzavier Parks one point, three rebounds and two steals; Risken Dawson three rebounds; Carson Dannenbring two rebounds and three steals; and Drake Berg two rebounds and one steal.

Two days later, the Cardinals visited Gregory to take on the Gorillas and beat them, winning a close 69-60.

The opening quarter wasn't kind to the Gorillas, taking an early beating of 14-4. The Cardinals continued to pile up points in quarter two, winning by seven points.

Going into half, the Gorillas were in a tight spot. They made a strong effort to turn the match around, however, when they took third quarter 18-8. The fourth and final quarter would end the Gorillas when the Cardinals edged them out 21-19.

Hedstrom dominated with 32 points, shooting five of 12 three-pointers for 42 percent and three of ten two-pointers for 30 percent. Brabec had 20 points, six rebounds and two steals; Barlow 17 points, five rebounds and two steals; Dawson five rebounds; Dannenbring two rebounds and two steals; and M. Berg and Banks two rebounds each.
