This basketball year has not been too kind to the Lady Cardinals. They went into last week with their first victory of the new season and managed to stay on a bright path for a little while, but were swiftly dropped. They first invited Neligh-Oakdale to begin the week. It was a strong start from the Cardinals, breaking through 13-6 to kick the game off. The Warriors brought it back to them in the second stanza, but the Cards still had the upper-hand overall. Seeing the opportunity to take another win, the girls gave it all they had. They dropped the opponent 16-3 in the third, and continued to lay on pressure into the finale. After a slow opening to the season, the Cards were starting to turn things around. Williamson put in work with 22 points, seven rebounds and six steals; Adyson Peterson had 15 points, four rebounds and three steals; Cherish Williamson had eight points, 12 rebounds and four steals; Tatum Ickes had four points, three rebounds and one steal; Emerson Mlnarik had five rebounds and one steal; and Bethany Leisy had two rebounds. Things were finally looking up for the Cardinals, and the beginning of this match was no exception. While nothing too major, the girls managed to pull ahead by one point from the start. A slight fumble in the second knocked them down a peg, but it was still anyone's game for the taking. After the Cards finally found the right path, they were humbled by the Knights, who stole the game from right beneath their opponents' feet. C. Williamson took the top spot with nine points, 11 rebounds and one steal; Peterson had eight points, two rebounds and one steal; G. Williamson had six points, seven rebounds and five steals; Mlnarik had six points; and Ickes had three points and one rebound. It was a one-sided opener, with the home team pulling ahead of the Cards early on. The girls learned from their mistakes and nabbed the second bout, but the opponent still held a significant advantage. Another big stride from the Blue Devils all but sealed the Card's fate. Desperate to stay in the positive for the week, the Cardinals made one last-ditch effort to overtake the match. It was a great attempt, putting up 18 and holding down the opponent to just four. But the game was decided, and Wayne forced their way to the top. SMH 4 6 9 18 37 WHS 13 5 18 4 40 With the loss served by Wynot, the girls drop to 2-5 on the season. They hope to boost their record when they come back to face Norfolk Catholic Monday, Dec. 29.
