Juniors Win Over Battle Creek And Randolph

The O'Neill Juniors and Seniors had an exciting week of wins.

Tuesday, June 7 saw Randolph visit the O'Neill Irish Juniors. Donnie Taylor took the mound for five innings of work, striking out seven Randolph batters along the way. The defense behind him was solid, committing only one error. The offense was also alive for the night. Alex Fuhrer went four for four with two doubles. Marcus McNichols also had a perfect night at the plate going two for two. Shea Lueninghoener was also two for two, knocking in Alex Furher as the final run with no one out in the fifth inning. The game was shortened to five innings by the eight run rule with the Irish on top 11-3.

On Friday, June 10 the Irish traveled to Battle Creek for a pair of games. The Irish Juniors began the evening with an exciting comeback for a 6-5 victory. Ryan Podany started on the mound, pitching the first three and one-third innings before getting relief from Shane Willats who pitched the last three and two-thirds. The night started off a bit shaky as the Irish gave up five runs in the first two innings, falling behind 1-5. But some timely hits after stolen bases produced runs for the Irish in the fourth and fifth innings to knot the score at 5-5 going into the sixth inning. Josh Womack started the sixth inning off with a single but was erased with a fielder's choice. Kyle Loecker then stole second and Alex Fuhrer knocked home the winning run by lacing a single up the middle. The Irish defense then stepped up throwing out the tying run for Battle Creek at third and Willats struck out the final batter to preserve the victory.

For the late game the Irish Seniors started Jordyn Johnson on the mound. A one out double and an error allowed Battle Creek to score a run in the first inning. The next out was a weak comebacker to the pitcher and then Jordyn put on a pitching clinic by recording the next 16 outs by strikeouts while allowing only one hit. Meanwhile, the Irish bats produced nine runs with the assistance of 11 stolen bases. Calvin Willats went three for five, scoring three runs while having two of the 11 stolen bases for the Irish. Dustin Ross also recorded two runs while stealing four bases. Connor Peterson pitched the seventh inning with the Seniors going home with a 9-3 win.

This coming week will be busy for the Irish teams as Hartington comes to O'Neill on Tuesday, then the Irish will travel to Stanton on Friday and both Irish teams will play in the Creighton Berrypepper Day's weekend tournament Saturday and Sunday. Then on June 21 Bloomfield/Madison will visit the Irish and on June 23 Creighton will return to O'Neill for another game with the Irish.
