The Holt County area was well represented at the 2025 NEBPreps Football Awards on Monday, Dec. 1 at Hurrdat Sports Bar in La Vista. At the awards, the top three finalists for Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Special Teams Player of the Year and Overall Player of the Year for each class were recognized and then the winners were announced. Named as the Class D2 Player of the Year was Gage Hedstrom from St. Mary's Catholic High School. He was also named as a finalist for the D2 Offensive Player of the Year. Hedstrom racked up some impressive stats this year. On the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) website, he was listed as number nine in the state for offense passing leaders with 2311 yards; number 10 in offensive rushing with 1855 yards; and number two in offensive total yards with 4166. In addition he is now the national eight-man record holder in touchdowns. Drew Schmaderer from Stuart Public High School came away with the Class D6 Defensive Player of the Year award. In the NSAA stats he was named the number three defensive interception leader with eight inter-ceptions. Grady Welke from O'Neill Public High School was named a finalist for the Class C1 Defensive Player of the Year. On the NSAA stats he was the number nine leader in defensive sacks with 11. Lane Bybee, also from St. Mary's Catholic High School, was a finalist for the Class D2 Defensive Player of the Year award. Other players from our area mentioned in the top 10 in the stats lists on the NSAA website included Ben Barlow from St. Mary's Catholic School who was number four in offense receiving with 1152 yards and number nine in defensive interceptions with seven. Also included was Marek Dvorak of West Holt Public Schools who was named number nine in special teams punts with 921 yards. Congratulations to our area football players on their outstanding year!
