O'Neill Graduate Plays Key Role In Historic Artemis II Launch

When Artemis II lifted off on Wednesday, April 1, it marked another major milestone in NASA's mission to return humans to the Moon. Behind the scenes of this historic launch was a familiar name to the O'Neill community: Andy Mahood, a 2001 graduate of O'Neill High School.

Mahood serves as the Construction Control Account Manager for the Mobile Launcher 2 project, a critical component of NASA's Artemis program. The Mobile Launcher is the massive platform on which the rocket is assembled inside the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). Once fully stacked, the structure is transported by a giant crawler to the launch pad, where liftoff preparations begin.

In his role, Mahood is responsible for overseeing key construction and financial aspects of the Mobile Launcher 2 project, ensuring that one of NASA's most complex ground systems is built and maintained to exacting standards. His work helps support the infrastructure necessary to safely launch next-generation rockets designed for deep space exploration.

The successful Artemis II launch represents years of planning, engineering, and coordination—efforts that rely not only on astronauts and mission control, but also on dedicated professionals like Mahood working behind the scenes.
